How much does your four year old eat?

Mine is insatiable at the moment. I’m not concerned as it’s healthy food mostly but DH wondered if we should try to curb it. I suppose in case he gets used to that sort of amount.

To give today as an example, he has had

Cereal (Rice Krispies) half a slice of toast and an egg.
Two ham sandwiches, crisps and some grapes
half a cucumber (!) and about seven or eight cherry tomatoes
A large portion of chilli and rice
Rice pudding
An apple

I am guessing he’s growing. And as I’ve said to DH, it’s mostly fairly low calorie, but still, blimey.

What do you mean by 2 ham sandwiches? 4 slices of bread? That sounds a lot.
Depending on your plate size, the rest (cucumber excepted) doesn't sound completely bonkers. But then I have kids who have always eaten way more than their peers, and sat low on the centiles. And, no. No heath issues here.

Bristollocalknowledge · 16/03/2025 07:09

It all depends on the portion size. Most children that age will be having a couple of snacks a day too. Is he folowing his weight and height centile? Can you clearly see his ribs when he he naked?

Personal I would like to see more veg and protein rather than double carbs at meal times.

henlake7 · 16/03/2025 07:11

Doesnt it depend on wether he is getting fat on it?
If he is a normal weight for his height/age then surely thats just how much food he needs at the moment.
(and as you say its not crap, just healthy food).

It's up and down with growth spurts with 5 year old DS. Some days he'll have 4 slices of toast for breakfast and other days half a slice. I'd just go with it if I were you.

Thanks. I’m broadly happy with what he eats - today was illustrative and not repeated every day, but it’s just the amounts I was curious about. He isn’t overweight but I am so obviously this is an area I’m watching so to speak.

If he’s very active and (obviously) growing, I wouldn’t think that’s a lot. My Gds (now 8) can eat vast amounts, particularly for breakfast, and invariably wants e.g. cereal shortly before bed, but is extremely active and super-slim. Might add that he was a very fat baby! - but that all melted away once he started running around.
