Record player advice please

Hello 👋

Soon to be 15 year old has a few vinyls and a very basic record player. The sound isn’t great so we would like to replace it for her birthday.

Would love some advice / recommendations please? I genuinely don’t have a clue!

Budget - no more than £150 unless this is wildly unrealistic

Thanks so much!

Is the sound not great because it is using rubbish speakers, if it gives you the potential to plug seperate speakers in that might be a better bet? What sort of player is it?

I have 2 small record players, one I bought in the UK at HMV a few years back and one I bought in Darty here in France which is a bit of a general smaller Currys type place. Both were less than £100. I believe Amazon do them as well.

I had one before these in the UK that I got from freecycle that someone was getting rid of, it was old but good. Often people are giving them away or selling old ones, I still see them on FB Marketplace.

They are generally turntable only so you will need an amplifier and speakers. eBay prob full of this stuff or perhaps Richer sounds for new

With that budget, you would actually be better off looking for a secondhand amp, deck and speakers. On my local Marketplace you could easily pick up an early 90s Technics hi fi stack for that.
I would suggest going no later than early 90s, anything after that had gone more to fit with CD and then digital sounds, Vinyl needs analogue to sound it's best.
Cambridge are good, also 70s Akai, 80s Sony is a good shout too.

here these will do the job they will have fab sound, as long as you have RCA cable output on the back of the record player these will work brilliantly. You will also need RCA cables 😊 (but you may have these in the record player box) I have them I can’t fault them. You can make adjustments to the highs and lows on the back of the speaker to get the sound you want.

No, don't! The last four of five things we've had from there has broken in about five minutes. We've given up on them now.

ok it’s all making sense now 🤣

we aren’t using any additional speakers and I assumed it was rubbish sound as opposed to there being something missing!
