I only learnt automatic. I passed on my 3rd attempt.

First time.

Had 5 lessons.

My son passed after 3 lessons.

(To be fair, he started learning at 12 and I started at 14 - in fields)

1st time, 3 months after my 17th birthday. My Mum and Dad used to take me out a lot though in between lessons (we lived rurally).

3rd attempt. First 2 I failed on parallel parking. 3rd time the examiner asked for 3 point turn instead so I passed because I could do that. It took a further decade to learn to parallel park.

My husband took 9 😫

I haven't even bothered to try.

The problem is that not everyone is cut out to be a driver but there's not really any other options. Public transport is extremely limited, uncomfortable, unreliable and ruinously expensive. So everyone, regardless of spatial awareness or concentration span, ends up having to learn.

Was it manual that he passed?

Yes it was. If I ever learn, I'll go straight for automatic. At the time, we'd spent so much on lessons and tests that the idea of getting a new car was out of the question.

One, and I do think it was at least partly because I had a lovely examiner. Partly because I'm good at justifying myself too, and I warned him that I can't stop myself narrating what I'm thinking (extreme social anxiety plus menopause) so I made sure he knew why I was taking extra care, that I was definitely being safe!

I wound the windows down as we left the rest centre bad he kindly marked that as one of the test criteria, although he didn't have to. And he blamed his chubby thigh for me fumbling the gears.

Very lucky. That said I'm a very safe driver!

Second time. First time failed as I didn’t indicate at a roundabout. Knew instantly.

6 at the age of 29 in a manual.
