I only learnt automatic. I passed on my 3rd attempt.

2nd attempt. Automatic. Failed on my parallel parking on my first test, second time manoeuvre was reverse bay parking.

Passed my theory with FULL marks. I was scared I would be called back for suspected cheating 😂

Ten lessons ! Dd has had nine I think, and is not anywhere near test level. Were they hour long lessons ? As googling says it takes at least 40 hours plus twenty something hours of private practise. So forty lessons, which seems a lot but multiple sites were saying the same.

DS is currently doing lessons and he's had at least 35 now, he's going to need at least another 15 I think.

Doing private practice too. I said to him not to rush.

3rd time in a manual. The manoeuvre was a bay park in my successful test.

1st and 2nd tests I failed at roundabouts. 1st was for joining the roundabout prematurely and the instructor hit the emergency brake, so I knew I’d failed that 🤣 2nd fail was because I didn’t indicate coming off a roundabout.

The test I passed was an easy route with only one roundabout!

First time, two faults iirc. I had to do a parallel park and reverse around a corner. Only had a handful of lessons but I grew up on a farm and was driving very young, so the lessons were really more about the specific techniques the examiners want to see.

DinoLil · 16/03/2025 07:34

First time, after 12 lessons, in 1988 hehe! Since passed the Advanced Driving Test, also first time.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 16/03/2025 07:44

I’m a great driver. Possibly the best in the world. It took me 4. First one I got 3 minors but one major. I was ten lessons in and didn’t understand a complicated traffic light - I shouldn’t have tried to take the test. I did it in my own car. The instructor said I was good enough and understood the rules but I needed more practice and he wouldn’t recommend. The others are a blur but on the 3rd I reversed around a corner and a cement lorry came round but me stopping wasn’t enough. He said I should have seen it. I said I did, that’s why I stopped. I’ve never known what I was supposed to do in that instance. It took 50 lessons in the end.

1st time back in the 80s. Also a RoSPA gold advanced driver and approved advanced tutor.

I have always really enjoyed driving.

ImWearingPantaloons · 16/03/2025 10:45

First time, aged 17 In a manual.

shellyleppard · 16/03/2025 10:47

Second attempt for me, my mum passed on her 13 th attempt!! 😳😳

RabbitsRock · 16/03/2025 11:00

5th attempt in a manual at 24 - incredibly proud of myself because it took me 7 years (including breaks) & I was once told that with my learning disability I shouldn’t be able to drive, use a computer or play the piano but my brain adapted to do all three! No theory or hazard perception in those days. I can’t remember all the manoeuvres but pretty sure it was a 3 point turn when I passed. 35 years now & I still never take it for granted 🚗

Shade17 · 16/03/2025 11:39

First time back in the late 90s. The theory test then was just 35 multiple choice questions on paper, I remember completing that in 6 minutes 😂

My practical test was also cut short due to roadworks on the route, the examiner said “we’ll just go straight back to the centre” total test was 25 mins

But she got there and that's all that matters💪

I have ADHD, autism and dyspraxia and it really wasn’t easy for me! I failed 5 times in my teens, then gave up: I had a break of over decade and then started learning again and took 2 more times. So 7 times total. At least I got there eventually though.

Did you pass manual or automatic?

Manual and I still drive a manual now, although if I can afford to will probably get an automatic when I need to replace my current car.

AnAquiredTaste · 16/03/2025 14:45

first time

bugalugs45 · 16/03/2025 17:50

Third time lucky here , but was almost 30 years ago. Manual , still drive manual now , my next car may well be auto ( electric )

biscuitsandbooks · 16/03/2025 17:52

First time with four minors.

PrettayGood · 16/03/2025 17:56

1st in a manual, I was 21.

I think it’s harder to pass nowadays.

In 1994, I didn’t have to do half of the stuff my kids have had to do.

FinallyHere · 16/03/2025 18:23

first time.

Parents abroad so could not offer to ‘supervise’ me. They promised me an old banger car as soon as i passed my test.l. I could only afford twelve lessons then accepted a cancellation eight lessons in.

Got confused and took examiner to the wrong car. Same colour model but of course no L plates and my key didn’t work. Got that sorted then stalled as soon as I pulled away from the kerb. Assumed that meant I had failed, relaxed and just treated it as practise. It was an hour later than my usual lesson, I’d never driven in the dark before, so had to surreptitiously search for how to turn on the headlights.

Was so surprised that had to ask the examiner to repeat himself when he said passed. He then apologised for coughing so much which I hadn’t even noticed.

assume he only passed me to avoid me complaining about his cough.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 16/03/2025 18:27

1st, manual, 18 yrs old in one of the hilliest cities in England

rainbowsparkle28 · 16/03/2025 18:29

Second time - in a manual (all the best ones do apparently!) 😂🤪

Topseyt123 · 16/03/2025 18:34

1st time. In a manual car. It was early 1984.

I wasn't asked to parallel park. If that had ever been required then I am quite certain I would never have passed. Ever. I think they do ask for it more often now though, and that's no bad thing, but I am relieved it wasn't asked of me. 🤣

Delatron · 16/03/2025 18:35

Second time in a manual.

First test was morning rush hour in London. It was carnage with kids jumping out in front of me. I had 0 minor faults but 2 major.

Passed second time with only one minor in think. I was 8.5 months pregnant so very relieved. Manoeuvre was to reverse round a corner both times. That was good as I am crap at parallel parking and bay parking.

GoldMoon · 16/03/2025 18:37

1st time but I think I pushed myself to pass because my driving instructor was so scary , and I was determined not to see him anymore !
