Unusual holiday accommodation

Could anyone recommend any UK based holiday accommodation. We're not really shepherd's hut type of people but love a converted barn or mill etc. Or even suggest a website. Ideally within 3 hours of Newcastle.

TIA

My manager dated in a helicopter, I think it was somewhere in Lincolnshire.

Coolstays.com

Some really nice places on here including train carriages and buses, as well as treehouses etc

National Trust have some unusual places. Worth checking their website.

I am here to browse the other recommendations.... I would second the Landmark Trust, for my 50th birthday, my sister and I took our kids (17 to 20) to Lundy Island.. we stayed in the lighthouse and my sister stayed in tbe castle.. it was amazing!!

I have stayed in treehouses / lake huts in France.. good for one or two nights, especially with younger kids but not much longer.

We stayed in a mock up of the submarine from a James Bond film. That was in the Isle of Wight though.

Narrowboat?
Our local lighthouse can be rented, but it's a long way from Newcastle, assuming you mean the on-Tyne one (DS lives in one of the others, so I have become a little annoyed on every other Newcastle's behalf 😁).

We slept in a Sea king helicopter, near Stirling. It was epic! It sleeps 5 (2 adults, 3 kids). It was like a tin can in the sun (hot!) and damp when it was wet/cold outside. Toilet and shower in the chopper! But I'd stay there again for a special occasion.

More than 3 hours away but unique- Portmeirion.

I second @handmademitlove’s suggestion of the Landmark Trust. They renovate and rent out historic buildings. Lots of follies, gatehouses, towers etc. Lovely properties really nicely kitted out.

I like the idea of waking up in a different location each morning but I fear the noise of the engine would keep me awake at night.

Also the downdraught would play havoc with my hair each time I got out.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/03/2025 13:02

@TwoLeftSocksWithHolesit was stationary. Apparently you can also sleep in a combine harvester as well.

My DB and family stayed in a yellow submarine in Liverpool

100% recommend the Landmark Trust! We've stayed in so many over the years and they are all really special buildings, often in beautiful locations that you'd overlook otherwise. This one with views over Robin Hood's bay looks like a a stunner (though I've not been there myself yet). Just be aware they have a policy of not providing wifi because mindfulness (surely they're going to have to go back on that soon!).

I can't find the exact cottage we used, but this airbnb is in the same group of farm buildings overlooking Budle bay just north of Bamburgh with views across to Lindisfarne. A really wonderful spot in the right neck of the woods for you OP.
