Simple question about trains

Can you still just turn up at a station and buy a ticket for immediate use from a machine / person? (Local journey).

Or is it all buy online stuff these days? Haven't travelled by train for about 10 years!

Yes you can

TwentyTwentyFive · 14/03/2025 07:31

It depends on the station but yes at most larger stations they still have desks and machines to buy a ticket from.

Some stations don't have ticket machines. Mine doesn't.

Yes.

Depending on the journey it may be significantly more expensive to just turn up and go if you are travelling in Rush Hour. Outside of commuter times, the "supersaver" tickets are broadly a similar price to the book-in-advance tickets.

If you board a train from a station without any ticketing facilities the onboard ticket inspector will sellyou a ticket with no penalty or premium for not having had a ticket before boarding. If the onboard ticket inspector doesn't get to you, you can do it at your destination station.

Yes, providing there is either a (working) ticket machine or a (open) ticket office. The smaller the station, the less likely you are to find these. If there is neither available, you can buy a ticket through Trainline app.

Sometimes if you buy a ticket at the station on the day it can be more expensive. You can check on line before travelling to make sure.

lf buying your ticket on line, watch out for third party agents who charge a fee in addition to the fare. LNER and Uber do not have such fees.

Marvellous, thank you all.
It is a larger station I would be getting on at, so sounds like there should be no problem.
