Should I bother with the MAP?

I’m 41 and use condoms with my DP. Unfortunately this split. Given my
age do you think I need to bother with getting emergency contraception?

I appreciate that this might be a stupid question but it’ll just be a load of hassle for me.

It depends if you've ovulated this month - if you have, then MAP won't work anyway. If you haven't, then it should work. Only you can tell how much hassle an unplanned pregnancy is worth.

ILikeCheeseandBiscuits · 12/03/2025 20:17

Yes unless you want to take the risk of pregnancy.

TokyoSushi · 12/03/2025 20:18

An unwanted pregnancy will be more hassle, if you really don't want yo be pregnant then get the MAP.

I expect a baby would be more hassle. This is when you need to be a mature adult.

MAPHELP · 12/03/2025 20:20

Thanks - I do appreciate your advice. I just wonder if there is any real risk though given I’m 41.

I probably will get it.

Depends where you are in your cycle. If a pregnancy wouldn't be a disaster and I was fairly sure I was in the "safe" part of my cycle I wouldn't bother.

TheOverstuffedWalrus · 12/03/2025 20:20

Where are you in your cycle..?

LubyLoo · 12/03/2025 20:21

You're 41 not 51!

MAPHELP · 12/03/2025 20:21

my last period started 25 February

That's quite an unsafe time. If your cycle is 28 days or less then you might have passed the point where the MAP works. If you have a longer cycle it might work.

Id get the MAP but sweat a lot for the next 2-3 weeks.

thejadefish · 12/03/2025 20:25

I fell pregnant naturally at 44 (albeit I wanted to). Whilst the odds are lower don't assume that it can't or won't happen- so long as you have periods there's a chance (however small) so yes I'd say get MAP!

TheOverstuffedWalrus · 12/03/2025 20:27

If you have 28 day ish cycles that's potentially a fertile time.. you are only 41. I'd get it.

MAPHELP · 12/03/2025 20:29

ok. Thank you. I’m going to order it and pick it up tomorrow.

I really don’t want another baby.

OP posts:
Fagli · 12/03/2025 20:30

Why don’t you want to get it? It’s a quick solution to a potentially solvable problem assuming you don’t want a baby.

I am the typical mumsnetter that lives in north London and most first time mums are late 30s early 40s so it is pretty common round here, despite what others have said to me!

MAPHELP · 12/03/2025 20:32

Well I’m flapping now. I might be stupid but I thought it was very unlikely that I’d be pregnant at my age.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/03/2025 20:33

If you're still getting regular periods then you are at risk of pregnancy from unprotected sex.

Davros · 12/03/2025 20:33

I had DD at 43 easy peasy

MyIvyGrows · 12/03/2025 20:35

Very few people are reaching menopause at that age. Get the map.

You can only stop contraception if you have had no periods for 2 years if under 50 or no periods for 1 year if over 50 or once you reach age 55.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 12/03/2025 20:38

It’s pretty well known that a lot of people get pregnant at 40+, when was the unprotected sex? It gets less effective the longer you leave it

Ddakji · 12/03/2025 20:39

Blimey, loads of my NCT group were in 2nd or 3rd babies at 41. Of course you can get pregnant if you’re still having periods!

MAPHELP · 12/03/2025 20:40

On I’ve ordered it online. Just waiting for the clincidian to approve and ill
pick it up tomorrow.

the unprotected sex was today.

Mum2jenny · 12/03/2025 20:48

At 41 you are likely to be fertile.
just go for the Morning after pill option if that is what you want.
