Travellers pitch - would you move by ?

couldn't find relevant topic so posting here

Recently enquired about a new build house in a new upcoming small village coming together. However, 6 houses down there is a travellers pitch. Reading online I don't hear good things and now don't know what to do. I currently live in a very prime location but the house is now too small for the amount of people we are.

Does anyone have any experience living near one or what advice would you give in terms of buying one near by and reselling in future etc.

It might be ok.
But no chance I'd buy it to find out.

Schoolrunstyle88 · 12/03/2025 17:10

Is it a “pitch” or a permanent site? If it’s a permanent site it wouldn’t bother me. There are a few near me and you find that unsavoury activities don’t generally happen in the vicinity of the sites. Nobody wants to shit on their own doorstep!

TENSsion · 12/03/2025 17:10

Nope. I’d stay put in the small house until somewhere better comes up.

My exact same experience. Would never say that about any other human group but they are the exception.

100 percent- as i say to people who i work with who stick up for them - they are very "privileged" never have had to deal with them. I just don't understand why they cant abide by the same laws as the rest of the world, expect special treatment above everyone else. Even today queuing in the supermarket expected to go to the top of the que and be served straight away, very politely told by the staff to get to the end of the que. Everyone of them has brand new cars and they don't "work". Don't get me started on the treatment of animals

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 12/03/2025 17:11

We've got 2 permanent sites in our village as they bought paddocks then converted into static van sites. The 1 is immaculate, really well maintained and the family are firmly integrated into the local communities/school etc. The 2nd is horrific - they've got a puppy farming business that the local council won't go near, and an ever changing list of residents. The anti social behaviour is appalling. I wouldn't risk it either, OP.

Ruebolive · 12/03/2025 17:12

Absolutely not .There will be no support from the police with any crimes/ antisocial behaviour! They literally can do what they like without any consequences!

It's a pitch and the ones where they move around

I am genuinely shocked reading all these posts as I never knew just how bad they seem to be. The only experience I ever had with a traveller was on a train where they came on loud as ever and the girl sat next to me asking if I wanted her to do my makeup and what nt just found it so weird

I wouldn’t, for the reasons you have doubts.

What might happen to pets? (I dread to ask).

A lot of dog theft.
Especially certain breeds {Sighthounds/Bull breeds..but also now any ''cute easy to breed/sell'' dog that may or may not be ransomed...for a ''finder's fee''.

Sounds far fetched, but talk to those who have had experience of this.

Hopefully you will find a better place to live..but the govt wants many more Traveller sites set up along with new builds..So do your due diligence.

We have a traveller site at the end of our garden and across the field. Their kids went to the local primary School but sadly they weren't allowed to go to secondary so they're all at home doing who knows what. We've never had any issues with them other than they've brought more static caravans onto the site without planning permission and then sought it (successfully). They are quite loud because they live most of their lives outside (there's a lot of shouting and swearing), they have dogs and Cockrells and in the summer they often have karaoke which is quite loud. We've got used to it, however it does feel that travellers are able to do whatever they like and are above the laws of the land, which is grating.

Catsandcannedbeans · 12/03/2025 17:29

Lived near one when I was very young, no issues, they were perfectly fine. I will say, they are loud. I remember them being loud even now. Some pitched up near my school when I was a teenager. Different story, it was horrible. It depends, but it’s not worth the risk at all.

Why pets ? I have 3 small kids and no pets and that's a big concern for me also

The children that actually attend school will go to the same local school as your children. I taught traveller children for years. We locked ourselves in the school after they'd gone home because of threats from the parents. . We weren't allowed to be in the school alone , to go in alone at weekends or to be there after dark. The school closed in the end because the ' naice' children all left and the traveller children attacked each other at breaktime and couldn't be allowed out .The parents were horrific. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole

Digdongdoo · 12/03/2025 17:34

A touring pitch? No chance. They ruin the playing fields and verges by our house every year. We have a couple of Traveller families on my road (themselves lovely, no trouble) but every few months their visitors are awful, destroy the verges, leave rubbish everywhere, shouting and swearing at all hours. Avoid.

EmeraldDreams73 · 12/03/2025 17:35

Absolutely not a chance. They can do whatever the hell they like with impunity. And they do.

Often ''Fighting Cockerels''. Game breeds.

coldcallerbaiter · 12/03/2025 17:38

Does the word ‘pitch’ inherently mean touring? Or are there 2 types and you have to check with the plans/council?

Justgorgeous · 12/03/2025 17:39

A big fat NO !

Mingenious · 12/03/2025 17:40

A official permanent site, maybe, there was a traveller site in the village I grew up in and it were no issues.

Someone would have to pay me to live by a transit or unofficial site.

Whowhatwhere21 · 12/03/2025 17:41

Personally I wouldn't. We have both In our village, a permanent site and a council run pitch. The pitch has been here about 5 years and has never ever been used because travellers aren't willing to pay for the pitch and rubbish disposal when they can get it for free on an illegal encampment.
The permanent site is no issue, they are all friendly, polite and don't cause any bother and actually rent some of their statics out as permanent homes to none travellers, so they are well integrated into the community. However they are noisy, up all night, fires going through the night. It's no issue to any of us as they are at the end of the village way back off the road and away from properties but it would be awful if they were within close proximity of other homes.
You may find that the pitch doesn't get used for the same reason as the one here, but I wouldn't want to risk it with it being a new development and not knowing

Shatteredallthetimelately · 12/03/2025 17:43

It would be a no for me, based on facts.

Some years ago our local council put in the groundwork for 8 static caravans on a parcel of land surrounded by fields between two villages.

Over the last 10 years to date the number of vans have spread over more land and now stands at 28, the extra added without any permission from the council.

Due to the council turning a blind eye another field has recently been cleared of hedgerow and more caravans are moving onto it.

It's not uncommon here, within an 8 mile radius there's now 4 sites opened up without permission, but as there's no come back it isn't a surprise to many locals.

Anti social behaviour is also ignored by the authorities.

We do however have one area where 'showmen' have a site and are as good as gold, they integrate with villagers, are polite and will turn away any travellers that thinks they can rock up and set up a pitch on the land.
