Travellers pitch - would you move by ?

couldn't find relevant topic so posting here

Recently enquired about a new build house in a new upcoming small village coming together. However, 6 houses down there is a travellers pitch. Reading online I don't hear good things and now don't know what to do. I currently live in a very prime location but the house is now too small for the amount of people we are.

Does anyone have any experience living near one or what advice would you give in terms of buying one near by and reselling in future etc.

When you say 6 houses, do you mean there are 6 new built homes and then a pitch for caravans?

I read it as there are six houses and then the camp. So six houses between the one the OP is looking at and the site.

The difficulty is, regardless of how pleasant or not the travellers who live on that site are, if you ever wanted to sell in the future you would have massive issues because of the preconceived notions around travellers.

Yes but they are like semi detached houses quite big and then they have a very small spot in the corner

More information is needed.

Is it a new traveller site? Is it static caravans? How many? Is yours and the 6 houses all new build?

They are literally building a whole new village and part of that will be the small traveller pitch but next to that pitch with the council houses and then further down the private ones. I am not sure how many but I assume they don't just stick to one spot so potentially next people always I believe

Is the travellers pitch one for travellers who have now settled down, or one where they stay for a week or two and then move on?

If it's the former, you're unlikely to have any problems. To be blunt, they don't sh*t where they eat, so if they're permanent residents they should be fine.

If it's the kind of pitch with a transient, ever-changing population, beware!

Location, location, location.

I'd rather be cramped in a good location than have more space in an area where there could be antisocial behaviour.

This is what I am leaning towards also. It's such a shame because the house looks beautiful and big but it's really put us off with that

It would be a big fat no from me but then I don't want to live next door to anyone, never mind a traveller site! It might be fine but I really wouldn't want to take that chance and like others have said, it'll be a bugger to sell.

Is this a second thread OP? I seem to have read an almost identical one last week?

No this is my first one here re: this

The pitch doesn't exist at the moment as it's being built along with all the new houses but from my understanding it will be one where they move around

I wouldn't buy it. Stay where you are and build an extension.

Wexone · 12/03/2025 16:28

NO NO NO- My local town has a good few of them living here, I have grown up living near them. I don't care if people say i am a racists or harsh, but i have particularly low tolerance of them and the younger generation are worst ever now. They are shocking. They are a law into themselves and get away with blue murder.

Myengagementring · 12/03/2025 16:28

Absolutely not, we had some travellers in our village who decided to set up in a park. They caused nothing but trouble, my son's friend who lived nearby was punched in the face by one of the teenage travellers, bikes were stolen from nearby houses and found on the site. They knocked a hole in the fence of the house that looked onto the park and started to use their outside tap for washing and their garden for shitting in. It was horrific

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 12/03/2025 16:29

The other thing to consider is if there is vacant land nearby. Travellers have, in the past, bought up land and used it for racing motorbikes/quad bikes etc., or filled it with all kinds of junk.
No way would I consider buying a house there.

If it’s a permanent pitch they do tend to stay there, there are generations of family in our local ones anyway. Some are fine, some have real problems with antisocial behaviour. I think the house would be extremely hard to sell due to the notoriety of travelling communities in the UK.

Don't risk it.
There was a massive influx of Travellers last summer where a friend lives that caused no end of problems, and the Council were actually able to get emergency evictions because of the problems.

“The impact on the local community has driven the decision to take immediate action''

This is why so many people are wary of Travellers.

LilyFox · 12/03/2025 16:36

I'd rather live in my car....

Moier · 12/03/2025 16:37

No!!!!! My sister had them move into a field at bottom of her garden .. they stayed two years.
They don't use their own toilets and do everything outside and l mean everything.. anything used as wipes is also left with the poo.🤢.. Sanitary towels and nappies are also left to rot . They race around on broken motorbikes / quad bikes .
People have had things stolen from their gardens .
My sister has now moved house.
This was in a beautiful location in the Lake District.

The amount of human excrement left behind was really revolting.

People saying ''How do you know it is not dogs ?''

People who pick up dog poo know the difference between dog mess and human shit.

Also.. dogs tend not to wipe their arses with toilet roll.

It's a really horrible thing to say as there are anti-social issues in every community but I would personally look elsewhere.

It's not horrible, there might be some nice ones but god they're in the minority. Most are utterly vile.

SneakyLilNameChange · 12/03/2025 16:39

Its awful isn't it because I would never ever say this about any other race/culture/demographic as they of course arent one homogenous group and they will be lovely and respectful travellers but...

No. Two family members have had travellers settle nearby and they've bought nothing but chaos. They settled illegally on a field near where we live, moved on fairly swiftly but the state of the place when they left was shameful.

ScienceFanGirl · 12/03/2025 16:41

There's a reason why this house is so cheap!

midlifeattheoasis · 12/03/2025 16:43

Absolutely not

MaidOfSteel · 12/03/2025 16:46

Do not buy it!
