Travellers pitch - would you move by ?

couldn't find relevant topic so posting here

Recently enquired about a new build house in a new upcoming small village coming together. However, 6 houses down there is a travellers pitch. Reading online I don't hear good things and now don't know what to do. I currently live in a very prime location but the house is now too small for the amount of people we are.

Does anyone have any experience living near one or what advice would you give in terms of buying one near by and reselling in future etc.

Not a chance.

Nope a friends parents live near a travellers site. Their windows have been put in and they’ve been shot at

AirborneElephant · 12/03/2025 16:50

No, 100% not for me, even if the house was a palace. Had way too many first hand bad experiences of the travelling community, one of the reasons we sold our last house was that they turned up at local park a couple of times and we wanted out before that became widely known!

DancyNancy · 12/03/2025 16:51

No, from personal experience, stay far far away

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 12/03/2025 16:52

Absolutely no chance in a million years.

miniaturepixieonacid · 12/03/2025 16:52

Personally, it wouldn't bother me at all to live in it. But I still wouldn't buy it because I'd be worried about not being able to resell it as it clearly does bother a majority of people.

Marcipix · 12/03/2025 16:53

No way.
My nieces could no longer walk to or from college as they were attacked by a gang of teenage girls every time they passed the entrance to the site.

Chuchoter · 12/03/2025 16:54

No, especially if you have pets.

LunaNorth · 12/03/2025 16:55

No fucking way.

What might happen to pets? (I dread to ask).

Why pets ? I have 3 small kids and no pets and that's a big concern for me also

No thank you next!!

We had some "travelling travelers" near us last year. In fairness to them, some of them did bag up their rubbish beautifully - but some left it billowing around the park. The worst part was the midden that they created round the corner, for relieving themselves 💩. The council has to send in specially trained cleaners for that bit.

Its awful isn't it because I would never ever say this about any other race/culture/demographic as they of course arent one homogenous group and they will be lovely and respectful travellers but...

No. Two family members have had travellers settle nearby and they've bought nothing but chaos. They settled illegally on a field near where we live, moved on fairly swiftly but the state of the place when they left was shameful.

I don’t hate travellers. I hate the behaviour of every single group of them I have ever had the misfortune to come across, though.

Aworldofmyown · 12/03/2025 17:00

I would love to say do it, it will be fine. No problems with travellers, sadly my experience is that I would not move near a site, even if the house was free!

Hillcrest2022 · 12/03/2025 17:00

I've known them to steal pet dogs amongst other deplorable behaviours.

My exact same experience. Would never say that about any other human group but they are the exception.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/03/2025 17:01

Not unless the house was half the price it would normally be, and probably not even then - and new builds are usually overpriced anyway so I doubt it'll be a bargain

Apart from the obvious worry it's resale value which would concern me. There may be no problems at all but you can't tell people what to buy and generally held perceptions could make it very difficult to resell

They dont have the best record of being kind to animals

Marylou2 · 12/03/2025 17:06

Absolutely not. Keep looking.

We lived by travellers as a child they killed our rabbits because they hated my mom I live by travellers as an adult it's their first ever house they have always moved around before it's like they have no clue about keeping good relationships with neighbours dog breeding (barking all day all night) Cockerels going off at all hours then falling suspiciously silent (they fight them) more dogs "visiting" more fighting kids getting hurt (the garden isn't big enough for kids AND dogs AND birds) the landlord is currently not doing anything about it all because it's not constantly the same issue the cycle it through because process takes time so by the time a dog complaint is actioned the dog is moved on etc etc

Itdoesntmatteranyway · 12/03/2025 17:07

Not a chance. I’d genuinely rather be 6 doors down from a prison
