Q for Harry Potter superfans

DS is halfway through reading the first HP book. He hasn’t seen the movie.

We live abroad, and are visiting UK in summer. We were talking about food we want to try, and he mentioned the lemon thing from Harry Potter.

All I could get out of him was- it was before Harry went to Hogwarts and was still with the Dursleys. Or maybe before he went to the Dursleys and he was a baby and there was a cat.

So… does anyone have any idea what this
lemon thing is or do I need to read the book myself??

Dumbledore likes lemon sherbet sweets

Kokomjolk · 08/03/2025 20:10

Sherbet lemon. It's a somewhat old fashioned sweet, but readily available.

Latenightreader · 08/03/2025 20:10

As everyone else has said, it will be Sherbet Lemons. They are a hard bolied sweet.

Waitwhat23 · 08/03/2025 20:12

Maybe a sherbet lemon? (Seems to be referred to as a lemon drop in American sources). Dumbledore mentions it in the 1st book as a sweet he is fond of.

Sherbet lemons are a type of boiled sweet with a fizzy sherbet centre.

Yes - my first thought too

frenchnoodle · 08/03/2025 20:36

Lemonade ice lollies are also easily available.

Andabottleofrum · 08/03/2025 20:36

I’ll have to ask DS, but I’m sure he’ll be happy try both!

You can get R Whites lemon ice lollies almost everywhere. They are very lemony.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 08/03/2025 21:00

depending on where you’re visiting you can go to an old fashioned sweet shop, where you can choose your sweets from lots of huge jars and then get them measured out. They will definitely have sherbet lemons!

Andabottleofrum · 08/03/2025 21:01

DS will be so pleased, thanks all!

Sherbet lemons probably for sale at King's Cross Station platform 9 1/2

BeachRide · 08/03/2025 21:18

It's the lemon ice lolly he gets on the trip to the zoo.

Kokomjolk · 08/03/2025 21:25

Doubt he'd have said 'lemon thing' if it was the ice lolly. Most places have ice lollies, including lemon flavour, and with an English mother he'll have heard the term 'ice lolly' even if they're called something else where he lives.

Sherbet lemons are much more mysterious if you weren't raised in a place that has them.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 08/03/2025 21:38

Oooh lemonade sparkle ice lollies, remember them?

Kokomjolk · 08/03/2025 21:40

It was a "cheap lemon ice lolly". Nothing exotic!

frenchnoodle · 09/03/2025 16:57

Is English his second language, or is his book in another language?

Because it may be something different, if he's having a hard time explaining.
