At what age did you start feeling old?

I'm 34 years old and have started to feel old. I have 3 kids, sahm...recently we went to the airport and a man who looked same age as me in security said 'aunty is this your milk' referring to my babies milk bottle. I felt so embarassed and for the first time I felt 'old'.

What are you going to do when you reach your 50s? Combust out of shame?
The aunty is a bit weird but otherwise he had to ask that.

heartbroken22 · 08/03/2025 12:30

The aunty bit got to me. I'm kinda accepting that I'm older but yeah the aunty bit made me think twice.

I’m early 60s. It hasn’t happened yet.

Could you have misheard? I've never known anyone call a stranger auntie. How is your health? You are much too young to feel old. I did not feel old until I got breast cancer at age 62.

heartbroken22 · 08/03/2025 12:30

If a stranger called you aunty how would you react?

I did think I misheard. But what else rhymes with auntie? 😂 excuse me?

I am Asian so aunty is quite common usage and a term of respect. Was he, by any chance?

heartbroken22 · 08/03/2025 12:32

No he was white

TheLurpackYears · 08/03/2025 12:32

Culturally, what other terms could he have used to respectufully address you as a mother of 3?
I'm heading for 50, I definitely feel like some life has been lived but I don't feel old. I never felt young either.

TheLurpackYears · 08/03/2025 12:33

Cross posted, aunty would be a surprise to hear from a white man, so possibly a misunderstanding.

Letstheriveranswer · 08/03/2025 12:34

About 52, when I had to start 'pacing myself'

I would ask him to repeat in case I misheard and then ask him why he was calling me auntie. Auntie is not an "old" term though. You can be an auntie when you are a child. If he had called you granny, I could see your concern.

xsquared · 08/03/2025 12:34

I'm 45 and still don't feel old.
However, when someone on here posted "I've never heard of Debbie Harry", it actually made me think they were really young and deprived, rather than me being old. 🤣

Lentilweaver · 08/03/2025 12:34

Well then it's a bit weird, but I have to laugh at 34 being older.

AuntieMarys · 08/03/2025 12:35
  1. But I've had a lot of trauma in the last 6 months. I still look.ok though
TheAlertFinch · 08/03/2025 12:35

Not all aunties are old. It's not like he called you granny.

TroysMammy · 08/03/2025 12:38

I haven't had that feeling yet and I'm 57. I'm comfortable with myself, I don't care what people think, I enjoy my life and environment, so far no massive regrets. I wake up every morning and I'm not in the Doctors all the time. Well I am but only part time, I've got to work 😀.

Diningtableornot · 08/03/2025 12:38

Aunty doesn’t mean old. It’s a term of affectionate respect in some cultures and I can’t think why this man would say it to you. Perhaps he stumbled over a word.

Diningtableornot · 08/03/2025 12:39

I’m 64 and don’t feel old yet but I probably will in the next few years

JaneJeffer · 08/03/2025 12:41

I would book myself into a rest home now if I were you

Well I wouldn’t base my self worth on that, aunty can be a term of polite reference in some languages, it’s possible in an airport it’s his usual turn of phrase and not a comment on how old you look.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/03/2025 12:44

At about 40. I had my baby DS on my hip at the time and was making tea for builders working at my house. The youngest buillder said to me "Is this your son or grandson?" (He had become dad at 16, so was used to younger grandparents).

TheIceBear · 08/03/2025 12:46

im late 30s. I don’t feel young anymore but I don’t feel old. I feel like when I had a baby a few years ago I aged by about ten years overnight

ViciousCurrentBun · 08/03/2025 12:47

I started to feel older at 58, last year as I suffered an awful back injury. The pain and being housebound made me feel older. I’m still recovering, though much improved.

I'd be confused, but I wouldn't assume it was age related.
