At what age did you start feeling old?

I'm 34 years old and have started to feel old. I have 3 kids, sahm...recently we went to the airport and a man who looked same age as me in security said 'aunty is this your milk' referring to my babies milk bottle. I felt so embarassed and for the first time I felt 'old'.

I get you. I agree with pps that you may have misinterpreted that man's comment. But maybe, as a SAHM of three, you feel depleted and exhausted and that is what makes you feel older. Maybe you have some Vitamin D or iron defficiency. I think getting fit is the answer (fit as in healthy and active, well with your physical self). Take comfort in knowing you are objectively young 😉 and take care 💐

I think you're spot on. I remember feeling older overall when I was around mid to late 30s. My kids were around primary age, I had very little time for myself, rushing around after everyone and I'd put on (in my case, a lot of) weight which didn't help. I'd kind of resigned myself to how things were. Now mid to late 40s I've lost 7 stone, I've regained a lot of my confidence and worked hard on my self image, the kids are teens and a lot of fun and I have much more time for everything. It does help!

Oh no 😂.

I started looking into Botox 😂

ChookaPooka · 08/03/2025 13:17

Around 45, peri started in kick in and I lost my va va voom. I made some lifestyle changes, lost weight, spoke to the docs about heavy periods and generally pulled my socks up, I was starting to lose myself so took action, gave myself a stern talking too and now feel like I did at late 30s (I’m 47) I honestly think if I’d have allowed peri and life to take over the second half of my life would have been quite miserable, I’ve had to recognise I was losing myself and take action to make sure that doesn’t happen ⭐️

Isn't it funny (or not) how others see us?

He might have been South African, normal there to call any adult woman Auntie, its a marker of respect. My exFIL was a stickler for people being respectful and I saw him on several occasions clipping kids around the ear for disrespectful behaviour when they failed to use Auntie when addressing a woman (including me and I was in my 20s).

Just to add, it turns out I was deficient in folate/iron etc. I’d never had any health issues before so I just thought me slowing down was part of getting older, I’d encourage a check at the docs just to rule out anything medical 😊

I'm 67 and starting to feel a bit decrepit

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 08/03/2025 13:21

I'm 64 and I don't feel old at all. The only time I realise that I'm actually getting on a bit is when I get ill (which isn't very often to be fair) and it takes me longer to shake off. I feel better now than I did in my thirties and forties, which was when I had young children, was a single mum and existing on not nearly enough sleep.

DappledThings · 08/03/2025 13:21

DoorToNowhere · 08/03/2025 12:48

I'd be confused, but I wouldn't assume it was age related.

Same.

45 and don't feel it at all yet.

I was leaving a job a couple of years later and the person replacing me thought I was retiring (from my photo on the website) - I was 48! The job was making me old before my time.

Keepitrealnomists · 08/03/2025 13:23

Calling someone aunt usually refers to elder in asian culture

pinkhousesarebest · 08/03/2025 13:24

I remember going through an airport and being behind a little girl being carried by her dad. She looked at me and said “ Bonjour Mademois…. ( hesitation) Madame”. I was 37 but had always looked super young. In that moment, I realised a page was turning.
After that, 42 when I had my second child. I felt it then big time. But I look at photos now and think how young we were. Don’t give it a second thought OP - you are still so young.

fussychica · 08/03/2025 13:25

68 but most of the time don't feel old. Recently though I have noticed my views have become more aligned to those I've previously associated with older people.
Music, well there's not much current music around that floats my boat as I hate rap, drill etc. Not sure what all the fuss is about Charli XCX, sounded pretty ordinary to me. Sam Fender is pretty good though.

I’m early 60s. It hasn’t happened yet.

Same here!

Wendolino · 08/03/2025 13:26

I'm nearly 65 and don't feel old yet. I'm sure I look it but I don't really care! I do lots of walking and I think that helps.

Me too.....guess I revise that when I get to 80 Grin

olesia66 · 08/03/2025 13:26

Im 58 and don't feel old. I can honestly say that my stamina levels aren't any different and I'm fortunate as I currently have good health. Occasionally I look in the mirror and see my mum looking back at me though!

menopausalfart · 08/03/2025 13:31

Feeling old will be different for everyone. It usually starts when your body needs to be mot'd far more frequently. Our minds age far more slowly. I've frequently heard people over 70 saying they still feel young in their head. Ageing is cruel.

Echobelly · 08/03/2025 13:32

I'm 47 and I still don't feel old. I feel 'older' and I look it and I'm fine about it TBH, but not old and I plan to accept it when I feel 'old' too.

I was thinking about the fact that although I do get some aches and pains, I don't really experience this thing of feeling like I feel way worse compared to my 20s. I think it helps that I first took up exercise properly (gym 2-3 times a week) in my late 20s, so maybe it's more that I was younger but in a less good state of fitness, so it's all about the same.

Ha ha. I've noticed my mum there on occasion too!

gollyimholly · 08/03/2025 13:35

I am in solidarity with you OP - I'm 35 and feel it 😂
Before clicking on the thread I didn't expect anyone to be as young as in their 30s day they felt old and assumed I was very much alone in how I feel.. that said I do think it's unreasonable of me to feel like this

Theuniversalshere1 · 08/03/2025 13:37

39 n feeling exhausted, ran down but am really anemic and recently diagnosed prediabetic so hoping I can turn it around. More long term health condition rather than old, but feeling it!

Firebird83 · 08/03/2025 13:37

I don’t feel old yet but around 34 I started to feel more like an adult. Until then I still felt about 18 in my head despite being married with 2 kids.

Firebird83 · 08/03/2025 13:39

I definitely don’t have as much energy as I did in my late twenties though, and I feel like I’m more serious than I was.
