What’s the worst beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Inspired by the “what is the best beauty tip you’ve received” thread, I wonder about the opposite….

What is the most useless, unhelpful beauty tip you have ever received?

I’m torn between being advised to sit in the sun with tomato ketchup in my hair years ago to bring out the highlights (it didn’t and was v sticky), and the first time I fake tanned but didn’t know to wear mitts when applying and ended up with conker coloured palms for 2 weeks.

I used to rinse my very long hair in vinegar to make it shine and then iron it to straighten it….

Dissolve a paracetamol with a drop of water and apply to spots
Doesn't work

Lemon juice in hair and sit in the sun
All that happened is wasps loved me and my hair went orange before snapping (cheers mother-she insisted I do this as a teen)

Apply vaseline to eyelashes to help them grow
Ended up with an eye infection

Cube of jelly for stronger nails (my mother again)
Gross to eat and doesn't work

That's because you're supposed to use aspirin as it's salicylic acid...

Was told by a barber (female) to coat my coarse, frizzy hair in mayonnaise and tie a plastic bag over it and sleep in it and it would restore the moisture. It leaked out when it had warmed up and I can only assume it must have gone in my mouth as I ended up with food poisoning .

Oh no 😮! That sounds absolutely horrific.

This is the same as taking collagen supplements

Yes, this is true. It’s made of gelatine which is just boiled collagen. It really works and is great for hair as well (eat it though - don’t put it on your hair!).

Mayonnaise to repair split ends. Smells very bad & very hard to wash out.

I had a friend freelance write for several woman’s glossy mags. Used to write the types of: “5 essential things to take on honeymoon” “fitness tips for beach bod” etc. Her boyfriend used to write a lot of her content. She was NO expert in anything and her BF even less qualified. She was not in shape, or healthy, her hair wasn’t nice, she dressed badly and not even her makeup was nice. 100% fiction writer.

A big eye opener for me, the people who wrote most of the magazine content were like my friend, just making it up. They just needed to fill the pages between the adverts & I think the pay was like £1 a word.

I have suspected this for years, thank you for confirming. Sadly it didn’t stop their advice to pursue highlights in a variety of mad ways from sinking deep into my psyche.

I really wanted to look like the Timotei lady flicking her long blonde hair out of a barrel of water (in an unhinged manner). No amount of lemon juice or ketchup was EVER going to make that happen.

a celebrity once endorsed Babyliss Big Hair on her page and I went out and bought one. i've never bought something following a celeb endorsement. (I naively didn't realise this was what it was, a paid promotion)
It was impossible to use, absolute crap. Waste of money.

Absolutely love big hair and have had a couple

Duck tape and melted crayons to remove unwanted hair.

That sounds like beauty advice from Viz 😂

BrownPapery · 08/03/2025 12:24

Big hair and 8 hour cream would be my best tips 😂

Worst- sunbathing in baby oil, making tinted lip balm by melting lipstick and Vaseline in a pot floating in boiling water, using an egg as “deep conditioner”, ditto olive oil.

Worst styles tips- if you ladder your tights put nail polish on the hole and wear them under jeans. Who wears tights under jeans? Me in the 90s.

I've repaired tights this way especially if it was higher up leg

Apparently anusol is good for tightening the the lines around the eyes. I've never tried it.

Your poor mum @thejadefish

Yes I’ve heard Anusol rumoured to be good around the eyes. Anyone tried?!

I am another victim of the lemon in the hair/sun-in era!!
Oh and wrapping an album cover in foil and holding it up to my face to channel the suns rays whilst sun bathing-covered in baby oil with a drop of iodine in it to make it orange!!!!!!!!

I also seriously regret the excessive eye brow plucking that I did as a teen.

*Also never trim your own fringe after drinking...

Anyone who read Jackie in the 70s and 80s will remember that if you had acne you should not eat chocolate or chips or any fatty foods. What an absolute load of old cobblers. No-one in the history of ever managed to avoide acne by avoiding chocolate and chips, or encouraged acne by eating them.

Well there is some truth in that actually. A healthy diet does improve your skin generally. And I know my OH's skin gets oilier if he eats a lot of fatty or rich foods like cheese which could lead to spots

Paniconthedancefloor · 08/03/2025 15:41

So sorry @ExcessiveNumberOfNinjas, I’ve just rtft properly and saw your excellent consumer review on anusol benefits!

Mum said she'd perm my hair, it was easy and so much cheaper than the hairdressers. Oh. Dear.

Also, cutting your own hair by putting it in a pony tail at the front and cutting. Tried it in lockdown, looked like Noddy Holder.

Raw jelly is lovely.

Yes we did do the lemon juice tick back in the day

Ah yes, Vaseline to eyebrows, that advice is still going strong. Also toothpaste on spots (although maybe that one works?)

I tried that once, it technically ‘works’ in that it dried out the spot but it also dried out all the surrounding skin and I basically had half my face peeling off for a couple of weeks! 🙈

Ah, happy days. No internet, constant strikes and inflation at 30% . But we had great magazine advice!

Aah makes me feel very nostalgic. Jackie advice was not to be trusted though. I liked the photo stories. God we were so innocent compared to now!

Retinol moisturiser. It seemed fine for a short time, then I got darker blemishes on my skin that did never had before and shortly after that my skin started reacting to it. I still have to be extra careful about high factor sun cream in the sunshine because the dark blemishes now return every summer. It’s very annoying as I have quite a light complexion and naturally blonde hair, so it’s very noticeable.

My lovely chubby cheeked oldest dd tried a bob once. Got back from the hairdresser wailing "I look like a satsuma!"

😂😂 that was me with a fringe too. Never again!

Weren't we?! I arrived at university totally unprepared.

I have NEVER really worn much make up in my life, I'm lazy and can't be arsed but if I do put any one its usual eye shadow. For going somewhere fancy maybe eyeliner, concealer and lip liner/lip paint too.

In my teens like probably most teens I suffered with black heads on my nose and chin, my dad LOVED to tell me it was due to make up and chemical (I didn't wear make up, especially not on my nose/chin) and that his mam had had PEFECT skin from soap and water. Spoken like commanding gospel.

My mam wore the same make up as me and didn't have the blackhead issue so logic would clearly say eye shadow was not the cause.

I'm now middle aged and can safely save having changed fuck all that have good skin is purely the results of age and hormones combined. I have pretty good skin most the time just like his mam did and my mam did and it is in fact nothing to do with 'soap and water' or 'avoiding' chemicals/make up' (in fact my lazy ass uses baby wet wipes more than anything given we have a toddler so an endless supply of them).

Its funny when adult men tell teen girls what the cause of their biological problems must be lol.

It's actually quite bad, isn't it? It gave me sort of raised spots which looked awful and then I read about skin thinning, which worried me. It obviously suits some people though!

I put neat tcp on a spot every 2 hours to try to nuke it away. Ended up with a 50p sized tcp burn on my face.

and you can never get rid of the smell of TCP either, smell it 100 miles away!

I've got one sitting in my bottom drawer waiting until I can think of someone to palm it off onto. Its praises were sung on MN ...

List it for sale, I’ve been thinking of buying one to try 🤣🤣🤣

I love my babyliss big hair ! I have a chin length Bob though … not sure how it could be used on long hair.

Me too, I love my BBH and would be lost without it!
