What’s the worst beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Inspired by the “what is the best beauty tip you’ve received” thread, I wonder about the opposite….

What is the most useless, unhelpful beauty tip you have ever received?

I’m torn between being advised to sit in the sun with tomato ketchup in my hair years ago to bring out the highlights (it didn’t and was v sticky), and the first time I fake tanned but didn’t know to wear mitts when applying and ended up with conker coloured palms for 2 weeks.

What do you use it for?
It just seemed very thick and greasy to me.

Edited

It’s the only thing that stops my lips chapping but I wouldn’t use it on the rest of my face as would be way too heavy.

Vaseline in hair to style, vaseline on eyebrows, vaseline on hands. Vaseline anywhere other than lips is a BAD IDEA.

I find it bloody amazing! Not hair but best way to heal a cut and I find it really helps keep Moisture in if I dab some around eyes and cheeks at night.

Eye hospital actually gave my son some on after an injury below his eye to help it heal.

Exfoliating my legs would prevent ingrown hairs after waxing. It never did. My hair is too thick and strong.
After 30yrs I bought a Lumea and I have weird smooth legs now.

Coconut oil as “suntan lotion”. Because you need to burn before you tan (1960s/70s). Children, do not do this.

I had a friend who did this. Essentially, she fried herself and looked like an orange pork scratching.

Another vote for Eight Hour Cream - it’s little more than Vaseline. I read that it was good for burns so put it on sunburn. Bad idea, it just covered my skin with gloop and did absolutely nothing for the burn.

And home waxing sets. It’s just not the same and I ended up with a hell of a lot of ingrown hairs.

It's basically Vaseline and lanolin plus vit e - pure lanolin is what breastfeeding nipple cream is.

Lanolin is extremely thick so really hard to use on face etc but mixed with Vaseline it's a bit looser.

I used to use 8 hr cream all the time in the same way but it's ££! So just use Vaseline now

I use Vaseline on my nostrils, eyes, eyebrows and ears when I'm gardening because it helps with the pollen. I'll smooth my hair with the warmed up residue.

Cutting your cuticles. Just, dear lord, DO NOT CUT YOUR CUTICLES! I avoid watching YouTubers who do gel nails for this reason, it makes me feel sick when they do it. Cristine/Simply Nailogical and Leighton Denny have drummed into me why this is a Bad Idea, but still it persists. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Fancy. We used crisp n dry.

ThejoyofNC · 08/03/2025 14:54

Spray hairspray all over your face to help your makeup stay on.

Not a chance I'd be doing that, it would feel horrible to begin with and I can't imagine it's going to do your skin much good.

Just in case you're now living in fear about getting outed, I am nobody's MIL yet, got a lot of years before that happens!

Just remembered something I recently found in TK Maxx for everyone reminiscing about the horrors of semen facials 😁

Wasnt there a video somewhere with live snails on people's faces? Just no.

Pluvia · 08/03/2025 14:56

Coconut oil for dry skin. Nightmare. Dried me out even further and my already flakey skin came off and left me sore and red.

Ph3 · 08/03/2025 14:58

Never wax the top of your eyebrows
factor 2 is perfectly acceptable if you’re already tanned 🙄

Lovemycat2023 · 08/03/2025 15:00

Sadly I fell for the fringe look at graduation time and so I am forever wearing bad hair on my mum’s wall, even 20 years later

Tip from fellow impoverished student way back when:

To save money, use washing-up liquid instead of shampoo.🙄

This, when I was growing up because there was never enough money. Am now TOTALLY addicted to Philip Kingsley at £70 for a large bottle each of shampoo and conditioner.

I'm guessing you don't mean the residue from your nose and ears....

Growsomeballswoman · 08/03/2025 15:06

Lard is as good as tanning oil!

ThatAgileLimeCat · 08/03/2025 15:12

Use 8hour cream on a flight so that your skin doesn't dry out
DH was in hysterics over my ridiculously shiny, slightly odd coloured, smelly face while I had no clue.

Go to a trainee hairdresser..... My hair colour didn't look any different.on the other hand my friend had bleach blobs and looked like a cheetah.

Plus sun in, lemon juice, crimpers over hairspray, overpplucked brows, lip liner darker than lipstick,frownies..

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 08/03/2025 15:15

Duo Tan….. I was that Tango doll 😳

"You'll look lovely with a bob."

No. I looked like a hamster in a wig. Chubby little faces do NOT look 'lovely with a bob'.

My lovely chubby cheeked oldest dd tried a bob once. Got back from the hairdresser wailing "I look like a satsuma!"

Whollbealonginawhatnow · 08/03/2025 15:20

Was told by a barber (female) to coat my coarse, frizzy hair in mayonnaise and tie a plastic bag over it and sleep in it and it would restore the moisture. It leaked out when it had warmed up and I can only assume it must have gone in my mouth as I ended up with food poisoning .

If semen was that good and made womens skin amazing surely L'Oréal and friends would have factories full of men being wanked off furiously into pretty little jars?
The fact that no-one has monetised semen leads me to believe some bloke made it up so he could jizz on his partners face.

Can you imagine the QVC episode trying to peddle their jars of hopeful jizz.

"You can use it as many times as you like, the more the better - before you put your make-up on, before you go to bed, let it do its work overnight, and any time during the day you just fancy a bit of of pick me up - even just if you're heading down the shops. Concentrate on your problem areas, really rub it in - feel that texture. It's so luxurious and the smell is just ... hmm, I don't know quite how to describe it ... there's a comforting familiarity about it ... but it is such a unique product. We've all had a go of it it here in the studio, even the boys! Look at these before and after shots to see the incredible difference it could be making to you for just half your yearly wage but you can pay in instalments so that makes it a bargain."

Paniconthedancefloor · 08/03/2025 15:21

Re semen based beauty: we could do a reverse handmaids tale and make millions in an award winning range of women’s facial care by milking them like cattle. In humane pens with x-boxes mind you.

Right, I’m off to apply to Dragon’s Den for some start up investment….

'Cool toned' foundations. I have cool toned skin and look best in pale pastels and with ashy blonde hair colour. I classify as a 'light summer'. But cool-toned foundations look like camomile lotion on me. I find neutral tones much more flattering.

Back in the 80s, I decided to put highlights in my hair. It looked dreadful, so I tried to dye it brown to cover the mess. However, the dyed parts went a really bright orange! I had to go to work next day (in a school) and was worried about what the pupils might say (or the staff for that matter).

And…

No-one said anything at all! I wonder to this day whether they were all being kind to my face and gossiping behind my back!

I did this once. Higights very patchy. Looked v silly so a hairdresser advised to use a semi permanent dye close to my natural colour and luckily it worked

An ex boyfriend told me that semen would make my facial skin soft! 🙄

Smart man, lol. Yuck
