Do I need to change my name by deed poll?

I've been married over 20 years and double barrelled my name when we were married e.g. Smith Jones. I now want to drop my family name and just use my married name: Jones.

Do I need to do this through a deed poll or as it's my married name can I just send off my marriage certificate to the relevant agencies etc?

I have called one of the deed poll companies for help and they said I needed a deed poll but perhaps they would as they're selling a deed poll service?

Any ideas?

I did this, and I used a deed poll

No you don't. Your marriage certificate should suffice for changing things with the passport office and banks. For day to day stuff, use whatever name you want, you don't need permission.

Thank you both.

@DustyLee123 - did you do a deed poll or an 'enrolled' deed poll?

@FluffMagnet - I could always try to update passport etc this way and see what they say I suppose

You wont need a deed poll. Sending the relevant info will be enough.

I changed my name fully (first, middle and last) and have never needed an enrolled deed poll. I had a typed statement witnessed and signed by two friends - that was it, it's been accepted by everyone.

I don’t know, sorry!
I think I sent away for a pack, signed and returned it, and they sent me a ‘certificate’ back.

You don't need a deed poll.

Your marriage cert should be enough.

I filled out a statutory declaration (plenty of places online to get some formal wording) and got two friends to sign with me. Used it to change everything after my divorce.

My DS changed his first name and didn't pay out for a Deed Poll.
It was relatively simple and his passport and DL reflect his new name.
