Idyllic family - birth order?

Thinking idly about adverts, instagrammers and the like. Two children, one of each sex, seems to be the approved family. Is girl then boy preferred or boy then girl?

Why does it matter? Jeez, get off Instagram. It warps the mind

It doesn’t matter Smile just idly wondering which way ‘round’ advertisers seem to like.

Get on ITV or C5 and watch some adverts for Sofas, supermarkets and family cars.

Although will it skew your research if there are two girls in an ad? Or six kids?

I think it tends to be older boy, younger girl. And yes I agree this seems to be the preferred family set up in adverts etc

Weird, isn’t it? I wonder why that is, especially when girls often generate more interest at birth.

I think the ideal family is 4 dc, 2dc is too common! 2 boys & 2 girls

Tomatotater · 05/03/2025 16:27

I eould havexsaid older sister with cute little brother, just because it ponders to the ' girl/ looking after/ nurturer narrative.

Girls generate more interest?? Can’t say I’ve found that.

My experience is that a first baby generates a lot of interest (no difference whether boy or girl). Second baby a lot less interest outside of immediate family sadly (more so if it’s another of the same gender)

'girls often generate more interest at birth.'

How do you mean?

As someone who (sadly) crosses over into advertisers/influencers/briefs quite often professionally, they're not fussed about the birth order.

I guess from an advertising perspective. I’m not saying I think that’s right but in monetary terms if you’re an influencer girls are ‘preferred’ (see Molly mae and Bambi)

I would have thought a boy first then girl, so the boy can learn to be the protector and the girl gets an older brother to look out for her, it plays to gender stereotypes.
