American Nuclear Weapons in UK

I live within 15 miles or so of a couple of USAF bases ( although they are often referred to as RAF ones).
I was vaguely aware that in the past nuclear weapons were housed at various locations in the UK. I remember protests at Greenham Common.
It is now reported that the USA want to reintroduce these weapons.
I am unsure about this. The fatalist in me says that my local area will be a target for enemy nukes and at least we would probably be wiped out quickly, but clearly I don’t want to be near such an obvious target.
I am ashamed to say I am not familiar with the politics involved. Are these weapons designed to try to keep us safe or as a convenient launch pad for USA to bomb Europe/ Asia with less risk to themselves?

US set to house nuclear weapons in Britain for first time in decades - at location 'targeted by Russian drones' — LBC

The US is set to house nuclear weapons in Britain, nearly two decades after the White House removed its last warheads.

It is very clear that the US does not have the best interests of the UK, or anyone else but the Russians, in mind at the moment. I would be heavily campaigning for this not to happen.

Ask yourself who exactly is the 'enemy' at the moment. Because the Russians are ours and are not Trump's.

The idea is that 'mutually assured destruction' should act as a deterrent to anyone pushing the button against an equally nuclear-equipped country.

In practice, we'll probably get to the point where someone (I'm looking at you, Putin) will realise they're already dying/defunct and will decide to take the whole world with them regardless of whether the rest of the world would launch back
