I think Zelensky could be murdered by the Russians / Americans or deposed. Putin and Trump have been in each other's pockets for years. Trump has imperialist aspirations along with Putin. Money and power are what matter to them.

I suspect he is being the adult in the room. Let Trump posture, flatter his ego, and see what can be done in the space that opens up.

I expect there are very few in the US military who are happy with the Trump/Putin relationship. They can't disobey direct orders, but if Trump moves on to the next thing they may be able to make lower level decisions that could make a difference.

Equally, if the US financial markets and Trump's popularity ratings tank he may do an about turn.

I agree, he has to open that space for the sake of this people. He is trying his best for them and pushing for a resolution that doesnt leave an open door for Putin

Which is more than can be said for Trump

Tubs11 · 05/03/2025 12:02

Europe will be advising him on this and it is a wise move that bides time.
Principles are great and I would love nothing more than for him to be steadfast but now is not the time for this.

They are tanking. I've lost over £975 in the last week alone in stocks on the S&P500

As for Trump - he embodies the "deal-making" culture of Americana - Everything is a transaction - everything. The Americans don't help countries out, they broker deals, that garner additional interest in resources or financials as time wears on.

The tariffs are also another way to force countries into making economic and material "deals"

It's business first.

They better watch what they wish for

Big Zaluzhnyi. Or Budanov.

@Flippercanorious Ridiculous

Russia is the one wanting to fight. They could end this today, but they choose to continue murdering Ukrainians.

If they really wanted peace that's what they could do.

But they don't. Listen to what they are still saying.

If that trump was such a peacemaker he'd be getting his mate to fuck off back to his swamp. Funny how he hasn't done that.

Russia is "ready for peace" it seems.

From Reuters - Trump also said he had been in "serious discussions with Russia" and had "received strong signals that they are ready for peace".
"Wouldn't that be beautiful?" he said. "It's time to stop this madness. It's time to halt the killing. It's time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars you have to talk to both sides."
Trump was expected to further outline his plans for Ukraine and Russia in the
speech to Congress, but did not reveal any further details on how he plans to end Europe's biggest conflict since World War Two.

Edited

Oh yes, Russia is ready for peace as long as they get a good chunk of Ukraine!

Ah, the theatre of international diplomacy a stage where every actor believes they are the protagonist, yet the script is written by those who understand power, not sentiment. Your impassioned plea to President Zelensky is commendable, but let's dissect the anatomy of this geopolitical chessboard.

President Zelensky's recent overtures toward peace negotiations, are not merely acts of concession but calculated manoeuvre's to secure Ukraine's sovereignty and economic future.

The suspension of U.S. military aid, a lever pulled by President Trump to pressure Ukraine into negotiations, has left Zelensky with limited options. European leaders, though vocal in their support, have shown reluctance to commit additional peacekeeping forces, leaving Ukraine in a precarious position.

Zelensky's proposal of a mineral-rights agreement with the U.S. is a strategic attempt to align Ukraine's economic interests with American priorities, thereby securing a more steadfast ally. This move aims to transform Ukraine from a mere beneficiary of aid to a partner offering tangible assets, thus recalibrating the power dynamics.

Critics like Vice President JD Vance have chastised Zelensky's perceived reluctance toward the peace process, interpreting it as a strain on U.S.-Ukraine relations. However, this criticism overlooks the intricate balance Zelensky must maintain between asserting Ukraine's autonomy and acquiescing to external pressures.

In this high-stakes game, Zelensky's actions are not those of a leader capitulating to foreign demands but of one navigating a labyrinth of geopolitical interests. He understands that the art of survival lies not in defiance for its own sake but in the strategic alignment of one's nation's interests with the prevailing winds of global power.

So, before we cast judgment on his decisions, let us recognize the complexity of the battlefield on which he manoeuvre's a battlefield where ideals often bow to the cold, hard realities of realpolitik.

This is my view. All European leaders want a deal too and for this war to end. So many young lives have been lost.

Out of interest, what is Russia getting out of this? I understand that it’s crimea? Does that mean he won’t be getting the eastern regions of Ukraine?

Butterfly123456 · 05/03/2025 13:14

The mineral deal is being amended as we speak for the worse for Ukraine. Starmer/Macron will go to US with Z. to be there for him when he signs it. He has no choice. US is bullying and blackmailing everybody in the world to get their way. We live in dark times.

Beautifully put, Vergus

Of course, if other nations - while claiming a higher moral ground - object to this approach they're perfectly free to refuse America's money, but it's a bit late to complain once they've become thoroughly enmeshed by choice

See it does surprise me that some countries don’t seem to really understand this fundamental truth about the American political system. They can offer you money and they will - but they want a good return. They’re not going to give you a helping hand just, because, you know, you’re in trouble. That fact alone does raise moral questions of course. But it seemed to me that Zelensky had no awareness of what he was walking into in that meeting - it was supposed to be a business transaction which fell down. They had the minerals deal ready for both Presidents to sign and the hors d’oeuvres were being laid out in the kitchen. He was supposed to say “yes, thank you Mr Trump for your continued assistance, & where would you like me to sign?”

The fact that Trump said “it’s going to be very hard to do business this way” during that heated exchange says it all. Zelensky got the wrong end of the stick - he didn’t understand that it was supposed to be a business meeting. There’s no room for emotional engagement - it was purely a transactional exchange

Personally I wouldn't want to choose on that one, but he certainly knows better now

Latest News - USA has stopped UK sharing intelligence from Washington about Ukraine with Ukraine.

It seems Trump gave a speech overnight.

No doubt more information will filter through to us in due course.....

Trump gave a 1 1/2 hour speech to a Joint Session of Congress last night. He hardly mentioned Ukraine, basically just saying he wants peace and we'll see what happens. Although Ukraine is a huge issue in Europe, it's not here in the US, so he didn't spend much time on it.

The CBS snap poll found that 76% of Americans approved of Trump's speech and CNN's snap poll found that 69% approved of the speech. Despite all y'all's wet dreams that Trump is unpopular, he isn't.

Yes I think possibly both - he didn't get the premise of the meeting and that's because he has become familiar with financial aid without the question being asked of him - what can you give in return. He was in shock, that much was evident
