Hairdressers - how do you feel about clients tipping/ not tipping?

I get so stressed about this every time I go to the hairdresser. I have a very basic cut and blow dry but it costs £45 and I just can't afford to tip on top. It means that I do it sporadically so not every time. But I feel so guilty when I don't and worry I'm judged. I have never been able to figure out what is expected. Please tell me!

I have a service based business and I never expect a tip, in fact I feel quite awkward when a client tries to give me a tip, given that I set my own prices and probably earn 4x an hour more that lots of them do.

Yes that's another reason I feel uncomfortable - it seems kind of patronising

I'm at the hairdresser's tomorrow; I won't be tipping. She's self employed like I am. I am not tipped so don't tip her.
I will, occasionally, give a small gift because I don't want to have to find a new hairdresser after over 20 years with this one. She's a gem 😀

I don’t think it’s necessary for a self employed hairdresser. You should set your prices do you are making an appropriate wage per hour after expenses.

RabbitsRock · 03/03/2025 15:18

I’ve never even thought about tipping a hairdresser. Today I’m having my hair done at the college & I wouldn’t even know if the students are allowed to accept tips.

saveforthat · 03/03/2025 15:21

I use a mobile hairdresser. She charges £10. I always tip.

purplecorkheart · 03/03/2025 15:28

I tend to bring the hairdresser I go to for my cut and color as he works for home a small gift ( think chocolates or a facemask). I also tip a very euros. This is because he is flexible with his hours and I can go afterwork rather than taking up time at weekend.

I go to a salon near work for a blowdry sometimes and never tip there as it quite expensive relative to what I pay for my cut and color.

A face mask? Like covid or one you slap on and rinse off.

I got a salon so I don't think she is self employed

I always tip my hairdresser. She is self employed and I always think she will at least be able to get something for lunch with my tip

user1471538275 · 03/03/2025 16:10

@madaboutpurple I'm fairly sure she'd be able to get somethings for her lunch even without your tip.

Pyjamatimenow · 03/03/2025 16:13

I pay £150 every 8 weeks. I don’t tip

3678194b · 03/03/2025 16:26

I round up to the nearest ten, it doesn't work out 10%. My hairdresser is self employed on a rent a chair kind of arrangement.

I think she should be tipping you for being a very good customer & helping to pay her rent/mortgage

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/03/2025 16:35

Mine owns the business, so I don’t usually, because he’s expensive. From what he talks about, he’s got more money than me.

treesandsun · 03/03/2025 17:02

I have been going to my hairdressers for decades and never tip him - he's minted. I wince when he gives me the price let alone give him a tip. He's was a friend of a friend and has become a friend so I get him a xmas present. I tip the person who washes my hair if they give a good scalp massage - and most of the time if they don't because they don't earn that much and are often p/time

mondaytosunday · 03/03/2025 17:02

I tip the employees not the owner of the business. I thought that was pretty standard.

CarpetKnees · 03/03/2025 17:19

Never tipped.
They set the price they want / think they can achieve and the customer decides if that suits them and uses the service or not.

  1. £45 is a LOT for a simple cut and blow dry
  2. No need to tip whatever the charge is.

That's what I think - I don't actually even get a proper blow dry it's a wet cut and rough dry. But, as shown on this thread, there is no consensus. So I remain in people pleasing anxiety hell 😂

Last time I went to the hairdresser she charged £55 for what turned out to be a shit haircut. Fortunately I didn't tip on top and haven't darkened their door since.

Chillilounger · 03/03/2025 17:58

I always round up/tip about a fiver. My haircut is usually around the £60 mark for highlights and cut/ blow.

CheekyRaven · 03/03/2025 18:18

I do if I can afford to on that visit.

pilates · 03/03/2025 18:23

I used to years ago but not any more the amount they charge.

Delphigirl · 03/03/2025 18:27

I tip my cutter and colorist £20 each and the hair washer £10. It’s about 12% of the total bill but I only go 2-3 times a year.
