Hairdressers - how do you feel about clients tipping/ not tipping?

I get so stressed about this every time I go to the hairdresser. I have a very basic cut and blow dry but it costs £45 and I just can't afford to tip on top. It means that I do it sporadically so not every time. But I feel so guilty when I don't and worry I'm judged. I have never been able to figure out what is expected. Please tell me!

My cut and colour is around £200. I don't tip the hairdresser as she owns the salon and the first time I went to tip her she told me 'not to be ridiculous'

I tip the hairwash/junior £10

My hairdresser has one of those debit card machines that asks you how much you want to tip, so if you don't tap one of the choices it's obvious you are actively choosing not to tip. I wish I was brave enough not to, it already costs £75 for about 45 minutes, but I always end up tipping 10%.

I tip my hairdresser the price of a coffee- not much but a kind gesture I hope xx

I tip my cutter and colorist £20 each and the hair washer £10. It’s about 12% of the total bill but I only go 2-3 times a year.

You tip £50 each time?? And that’s only 12%
jeez you tip more than I pay for my haircut.

TheNumberfaker · 03/03/2025 20:33

I never tip but I gave my hairdresser a lovely bottle of wine once.

Tipping just seems awkward and over the top when you’re paying nearly £50 for a haircut.

shivermetimbers77 · 03/03/2025 21:05

I always tip a hairdresser.

PeachBlossom1234 · 03/03/2025 21:19

I don’t tip because they get at least the minimum wage, it’s not like America where they depend on tips. I do however usually take a tray of donuts or a coffee for my stylist as a treat

singletonatlarge · 03/03/2025 21:23

I always tip, it is not a well-paid profession even if people are self-employed.

Hedjwitch · 03/03/2025 21:34

My last hair cut ( last Saturday) cost a tenner. Getting a buzz cut was the best thing I've ever done. It's saving me a fortune, requires no maintenance and looks surprisingly cool, especially as it is snow white!

tellmesomethingtrue · 03/03/2025 21:54

I earn minimum wage.
My hairdresser whom I see just 3 times a year, sends his kids to private school. I don't tip!

Ilovelblue · 03/03/2025 22:11

My hairdresser owns her own salon and sets her own prices. I would still go even if she doubled her prices (well, maybe not but you get the idea) so I don't tip. I always buy her a present at Christmas and will occasionally take her some flowers throughout the year.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 03/03/2025 22:12

I tip my hairdresser because I want to. I don't routinely tip anywhere else for anything.

ClearHoldBuild · 03/03/2025 22:16

I pay £40 for a one length cut. I give her £10 for Christmas so you could call that a tip.

Snoopy1234567 · 04/03/2025 07:09

No more than £5 each time. But I go once a month for a cut and colour (including highlights) so spend a fortune at the hairdressers!

OneLoyalGreyFish · 04/03/2025 11:14

I stopped tipping when the price of my wash, cut and blow dry went up from £26 to £34 in one fell swoop! I also went from going every 4/5 weeks to every 5/6 weeks so I ended up still spending around the same in a year. Also it’s their own salon.

A face mask? Like covid or one you slap on and rinse off.

Slap on and rinse off. Not sure how welcome the other type would be!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/03/2025 14:31

I have a basic cut and colour without highlights and it's £110. No tip! They get enough from me.

I think that depends on where you go. Last time I paid £65 and I was in the chair for less thanan hour. If she gets a third of that she’s on more than me!

Maverick66 · 06/03/2025 10:10

My husband is self employed ...not a hairdresser .
He never gets tipped ..in fact, he mostly gets asked to discount his price .

3peassuit · 06/03/2025 10:17

My local salon charges around £70 for a cut and blow dry. I found a hairdresser who comes to my home, charges £40 and does a better job. I tip £5 which is only £3 more than I’d have to pay for parking in town.
