Hairdressers - how do you feel about clients tipping/ not tipping?

I get so stressed about this every time I go to the hairdresser. I have a very basic cut and blow dry but it costs £45 and I just can't afford to tip on top. It means that I do it sporadically so not every time. But I feel so guilty when I don't and worry I'm judged. I have never been able to figure out what is expected. Please tell me!

I had same problem lately. I've been giving a fiver. But next time it's going to be over £150. Which is eye watering on its own. But j feel after four hours sat in the chair that I need to offer something.

CarpetKnees · 03/03/2025 18:31

@Delphigirl £50 is only 12% of what you pay for a hair-do ??? Shock

TomatoSandwiches · 03/03/2025 18:33

I always tip because they are excellent, we have mixed texture and curly hair in our family and they know exactly what they're doing for each of us.

I only tip at Christmas

Fmlgirl · 03/03/2025 18:37

I always tip. Costs 95 and I give a fiver and that seems low for a tip.

hopeishere · 03/03/2025 18:38

I generally don't tip as I go to the salon owner. They now have the option to add a tip when you pay so they then stand and watch you click on "no tip". Confused It's about £100 every six weeks and they are putting g their prices up 5% (nic related presumably).

As I say I only go 2ce a year but yes it is insane
I’ve been going there since I was 18 though

rockingbird · 03/03/2025 18:43

I always tip £5 she's worth every penny and I like to show my appreciation. I've always been treated well and slotted in when I need my hair done ☺️ she works so hard making everyone look so fabulous!

bugalugs45 · 03/03/2025 18:54

I usually tip £5, and the apprentice that cuts little ones hair ( for free ) gets £10 , she's a family friend but I wouldn't trust her with my crazy barnet (yet )

Ladyymuck · 03/03/2025 18:55

I pay £180 for cut and colour so didn't tip as felt I paid enough but at the end of last year the place she works in have introduced tipping by card. When I pay it comes up on the screen and it always catches me unawares and I have ended up tipping 10% as it automatically comes up. I feel this is far too much and I really need to get to grips with their new tipping system. I work in a stressful professional role too also working with people. I work countless extra hours which I don't get paid for and definitely wouldn't ever be tipped for. My hairdressers new tipping system just feels rather greedy to be honest.

Meecrowahvey · 03/03/2025 18:55

I've never tipped a hairdresser.

Mydahliasareshit · 03/03/2025 19:13

Mobile hairdresser all the way. They set their charge, pay on the app at booking, tipping doesn't arise and zero awkwardness on the day.

notatinydancer · 03/03/2025 19:17

Delphigirl · 03/03/2025 18:27

I tip my cutter and colorist £20 each and the hair washer £10. It’s about 12% of the total bill but I only go 2-3 times a year.

That is a huge amount , that's not usual.

I always tip my hairdresser. She is self employed and I always think she will at least be able to get something for lunch with my tip

So you assume that she's a bad business woman who can't work out her prices well enough to cover her lunch?

My hairdresser is also self employed, I've never tipped her or any other self employed person who does work for me.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 03/03/2025 19:25

@PinkyPieface the hairdressers usually are self employed. they more often than not, rent a chair in a salon.

Onelifeonly · 03/03/2025 19:26

The hairdresser I went to as a teen used to have a box for tips with slots labelled with each person's name. I used to feel so awkward putting money in for whoever had cut my hair. I'd worry they could see how much it was or would check immediately I left and think I hadn't given enough.

But all these years later, I regard tipping as patronising, and old-fashioned. If they want to charge more, fine, but I just don't tip and now that people tend to just pay extra on their cards (if they do), I don't even know if others tip.

I've been loyal to the same hair salon for over 20 years and always took my children there too, so they've done fairly well out of me.

LovelyJubly12 · 03/03/2025 19:31

I never tip , give her a present at Xmas. They charge enough!!

Spectre8 · 03/03/2025 19:33

I never tip. Just set the prices accordingly. If I have to tip I'll go use someone else and they can lose my business entirely.

TheChosenTwo · 03/03/2025 19:35

I always leave mine a tip, she’s a friend and charges me mates rates and hasn’t put her prices up in about 10 years so I stick £20
on top.
She has built a salon at home is very much self employed!

SuperbOwls · 03/03/2025 19:35

I usually leave a tip for the Saturday girl who does the hair washing/sweeping

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 03/03/2025 19:39

How long are you in the chair for £45?

I used to tip my hair dresser with a pound or two. I went for the first time in years last week, I was suprised at how expensive it now is. I did not tip!

northernbeee · 03/03/2025 19:47

I don't tip - hair or beauty. My hairdresser is co-owner and my beauty woman is self employed. I was self employed for many years and never got a tip, although never expected one. You set your prices accordingly and/or you earn a wage so I don't see the need to tip.

Noodles1234 · 03/03/2025 19:50

Personally I don’t tip, however occasionally I might at Christmas if I have cashier just round up to the nearest 5 or 0. She is quite reasonable, it’s not just “I don’t get tipped so why should I”, as that’s a fruitless comment, more I would prefer to tip everyone all the time, the shop assistant, the dustman etc. why stop at 1, so I kinda of don’t to anyone except possibly at Christmas and share it around.
