Hunt's NI cut was an electoral bribe.

Yes, as you say, both NI cuts were attempts to move the polling numbers - I have no idea why they offered the second one in Feb 24 when the first had made no difference. Transparent. Yes I would have reversed it - but then I would have also made that absolutely clear to the electorate in advance.
Both main parties got away with nonsense in their manifestos.

SerendipityJane · 09/03/2025 10:07

In case I get accused of being a denier, of course anthropogenic warming is real. The issue is how, how far and how fast we take steps to mitigate our part in it.

There is also the faint - but clearly discernible - underlying sense that "this" (whatever "this" is) is the only way forwards. And whether people can articulate it or not, that does lead to a race memory of other times when the population was told "this" is the only course of action. And remembering that inevitably "this" course of action is the one where the poor pay most and the rich nothing.

Hunt's NI cut was an electoral bribe.

Of course it was and a carefully laid trap for the incoming party that had pledged not to increase taxes on working people.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/03/2025 11:49

Honestly, I think they just need to bite the bullet on the NI reversal. The public have got 5 years to get over it and they were OK with Rishi trying to increase it. It would have been a better option than the employers NI fiasco.

As a general rule the public want a roof over their heads, being able to afford to put food on the table, to get a GP appointment and not to be left dying in a hospital corridor. They aren’t hugely bothered by paying a bit more tax to pay for that. The Tories did horrifically on all of those.

The media will print whatever they want they won the election despite them. Maybe they just need to learn to govern that way.

Criticising net zero mania has nothing to do with other, unrelated decisions.

In case I get accused of being a denier, of course anthropogenic warming is real. The issue is how, how far and how fast we take steps to mitigate our part in it.

As for Hunt, no, I don’t think the NI cut was a bad decision. I’m in favour of lower taxes. But if tax needs to go up now to pay for the military, then so be it.

When CC hits, it will make the present troubles in Europe & the US look like a tea party.

Hunt? the cuts weren't even costed, let alone affordable... he did them to make sure Labour had less money coming in and would therefore have to increase taxes elsewhere... pleased with that?

Labour now need to reverse one of the NI rises, justified by the changes needed in the Defence budget.. an unknown when they promised no tax rises.

The business tax increases haven't really hit growth, there was none previously was there? We've had 14 years of pretty much stagnate growth.

We were in recession Q4 2023... despite her budget, we escaped that Q4 2024.

Reform eating itself is a joyous thing to behold.

Agree and if I was in charge I'd be reversing austerity measures, they don't work, and implementing a Keynesian economic approach. That's the brilliant John Maynard Keynes.

DuncinToffee · 09/03/2025 13:19

Lowe is now taking Reform to court.😂

I suspect they will settle out of court. Presumably Reform subscribers will be happy with this (not that they have any choice).

Farage will not want the inner workings of Reform exposed to the corrosive sunlight of testimony under oath.

Also, you'd have to have the case conducted in Russian, wouldn't you ?

Isn't it? We all knew it would happen, but within a year of getting elected, it is joyous.

May the far right splinter into the Bruv party 🤣, Reform and whatever other freak parties come a-crawling out.

Notonthestairs · 09/03/2025 15:57

"What on earth for?"

I don't know what he's specifically threatened but presumably he has appointed lawyers to represent him in respect of the internal investigation and the police investigation.

Separately this popped up - interesting thread from Luke Tryl. Looks like Lowe has lent towards the politics of the online far right & Farage knows that would significantly reduce their appeal to voters.

So Farage is harvesting voters from the Conservatives still, despite his pathetic and limp threat to Labour that's he coming for them next.

The sun is shining and record temperatures broken this weekend and they still can't chill. Obviously rumbled.

I think it might have taken a bit longer if it weren’t for Musk’s intervention over Tommy R and grooming gangs. It forced Farage’s hand into explicitly having to state that TR wasn’t welcome in Reform.

In other sad news Laurence Fox is going to be taking a break from social media from tomorrow.I’m sure we’re all going to be gutted.
