Dressing table for 6 year old

Would you go for a full size dressing table for 6 year old or a child’s one? (It’ll fit in an alcove so won’t be huge either way). Any suggestions?

For a 6 year old? Neither!

MumonabikeE5 · 02/03/2025 19:57

I would use adjustable legs (ikea) and a surface, which you can move a few times over then next 4/6 years.

with a kids desk chair that rises.

do the mirror with lights,
and lots of places for hair clips, elastics and jewels/beads/broaches etc.

it’s handy to ahve a place to keep all that stuff. And to know where the hair brush is.

but I wouldn’t put one in a room that doesn’t also have a big drawing table, toy kitchen, and plenty games- unless there is also a dedicated play room.

MinistryofThyme · 02/03/2025 19:58

I would give the child a desk. The desk can have a mirror and a box of fun hair clips I suppose, but also loads of craft supplies. I mean I’d rather it didn’t have the former, especially at 6, but I definitely wouldn’t be dedicating a sole space for a prepubescent child to focus on their appearance.

She has none of those in her bedroom. We don’t have toys upstairs, I want to keep it relaxing and calm so just books, teddies and her Yoto. Toys are all kept downstairs.

Who said it’s about focusing on her appearance…? It’s a table and chair (with mirror) which has many uses. She likes to watch in the mirror when I do her hair for school each morning.

Wow some quite judgemental replies…! Don’t worry, she has plenty of toys (none in her room though). I’m not depriving her of being a child by asking for dressing table recommendations. It would be a place to keep all of her (many) hair accessories, do her hair each morning for school, a space for her to do drawing on whilst we wind down for bed etc., keep all her trinkets etc in the drawers. It’s a table and chair (with a mirror) at the end of the day - hardly anything too inappropriate.

Why not just buy a desk then, that you can put a mirror on if you really feel you need to? It's incredibly sad to think that a 6 year old doesn't really have toys in their room but would have a piece of furniture focused around how she looks.

It’s not incredibly sad at all - you are being ridiculous.
Her bedroom is for relaxation, reading, sleeping and listening to her Yoto player. Plus she doesn’t play in it anyway as always wants to be downstairs wherever we are.
Ok so if I’d have asked for recommendations for a desk and chair (that would go in front of a mirror that’s on the wall in her bedroom already, say) that would be acceptable? Or is it inappropriate for 6 year olds to have mirrors in their bedrooms now too?

For a six year old I would probably get a child's dressing table, as I'd assume it may end up with pen marks or nail varnish etc on it. I wouldn't spend much, as I'd expect to replace / upgrade it in a couple of years when she might like a bedroom makeover. Sorry to see that you've had such a negative response to a perfectly ordinary question OP.

Thank you 🙏 I was beginning to think is it really that unusual to have a chair, table and mirror in her bedroom (which is essentially what a dressing table is…!) in my child’s bedroom.

These replies have been so condescending… I find it quite insulting that people think daughter doesn’t have any toys or craft materials just because I am thinking of getting her a dressing table to store her bits and bobs in 😅 trust me, she is not short of toys, books or crafts!!

I think it's sad too, the thought that girls are assumed to want to faff around with their hair at that age. Would anyone buy a dressing table for a boy? She's going to be under enough pressure from the rest of the world to judge herself by her appearance, why start it at home?

Interested to know why you think a 6 year old who loves drawing, reading, doing her hair and has a million hair clips and bits and bobs can’t have a desk, chair and mirror in her bedroom? (Which is essentially what a dressing table is).

Who’s assuming…? I know because she tells me and is often doing her, mine, her brothers, her dolls’ hair….and why are you assuming she will spend all her time sitting at it looking in the mirror…? She also loves to draw, write and read books which she could also use it for. Oh and her younger brother loves dressing up in princess dresses with her and having her ‘do’ his hair so maybe he will use it too…!

I hope that you get her brother a dressing table too, OP, genuinely. Tbh I didn't realise that a dressing table was still an actual thing, I only see them in old movies. But if he loves dressing up then he should have somewhere for all his accessories too. Because it's just a table with a mirror, after all.

Well he won’t have one in his room as he has the box room so it won’t fit but they will both have use of it. I honestly would not have posted this if I knew I’d be made to be such a terrible parent for even considering a dressing table…!

My DD loves her desk/dressing table. I git her a desk that has drawers on one side and shelves in the other. I also put one of those free standing mirrors with the lights on it and got her a cool swivel chair - she loves the set up!

You mean you have dedicated a sole space for your prepubescent child to focus on their appearance too…!? 😱

Ooh I like the swivel chair idea.

Lol, I do and she's had it since she was 8 (9 now). It helps organise all her hair stuff and other toiletries (shock horror she uses Bubble Moisturiser too). She also does her home work there (on her kid friendly laptop). Plus she loves organising it and has little trinkets she keeps on there as decorations

Well you didn't say that at first. You specifically said dressing table.

She's 8. She doesn't need to moisturise unless it's for a medical reason...
