Dressing table for 6 year old

Would you go for a full size dressing table for 6 year old or a child’s one? (It’ll fit in an alcove so won’t be huge either way). Any suggestions?

@WhichLevis Get her the full sized dressing table. It’s something that she will have for many years and you might as well get her one that she won’t outgrow.

My dd has always wanted a dressing table but unfortunately we just haven’t got the space. She does have a desk. I like @Hayley1256 idea of turning a desk into a dressing table with a free standing mirror with lights.

WhichLevis · 03/03/2025 21:03

It’s the same thing.

No it's not, and you know it, because you changed your reasoning.

The purpose you originally described was for make up and doing hair. That's what dressing tables are for.

You then changed the time when people quite rightly pulled you up on it.

If you'd asked about a desk, you wouldn't have had the criticism. 🤷‍♀️

Didn't ask for and don't need your opinion

Well, you have it anyway.

You're wrong to encourage a child to moisturise for vanity.

Please quote me where I said the purpose of it was for make up?

How is moisturising vanity? Its basic skin care and makes people feel good - nothing to do with looks. Your making a lot of assumptions and I really hope your not one of those parents that would deprive a child from doing anything that makes them feel good about themselves!

If OP wants to buy her DD a ton of make up (Which she hasn't even said) for playing fancy dress then that's her choice and isn't going to do any harm to her DD (or DS)

My DD uses a cleanser and moisturiser that is suitable for all ages and she does so because she enjoys the routine and likes how it makes her skin feel. She also see's me do it and wants to copy what I do.

Enjoy being a misery

WhichLevis · 03/03/2025 21:24

@Blubbles What you fail to realise is that not everyone uses everything in exactly the same way. You had no idea how daughter would use a dressing table. She does not own any make up or skin care so of course would not be using it for that. As I said in various posts it would be for doing her hair, drawing and storing her trinkets, hair stuff, and other random bits and bobs she accumulates. It was always going to be for that even if you assume (wrongly) otherwise.

Because an 8 year old doesn't need to care for their skin, because they're 8 🤷‍♀️ so the only reason to do it is for vanity.

Sozzles.

You didn't. I'm saying that's what people associate dressing tables with.

So people assume that's what you want to use it for.

VenusClapTrap · 03/03/2025 21:27

I got dd a nice (adult sized) antique dressing table when she was about 8. Her room has two windows in alcoves, so she has the dressing table in one, and a desk in the other. Both surfaces are piled high with clutter and neither used for the purposes for which they were purchased. 🙄

You haven't even got her age right. Make up would be vanity, moisturiser is feel good. Anyways, I'm going to go back to enjoying my very nice life now :)

Well you know what they say about assuming…

Perhaps be a little more open minded next time and not judge a mother for enquiring about a piece of furniture for her daughter’s bedroom that would be used for entirely appropriate and age related purposes.

My daughter has one like this and loves it

Absolutely nothing wrong with a dressing table in a kids room!

Ddakji · 03/03/2025 21:39

I still can’t get over no toys in the bedroom. Though I don’t see why a small child needs a mirror, especially over toys!

Why do people assume she has a mirror over toys? She has plenty of toys. Why does it matter where they are kept? Why does my child need toys in her bedroom when she has all her toys in the living room? She doesn’t want to go upstairs and play by herself. She wants to be downstairs with the rest of the family in the living space. I wouldn’t stop her taking a toy up if she wanted to play upstairs with it but she never has wanted to. It’s not that unusual. Her bedroom is used for resting and relaxing and not cluttered with toys.

Omg I can't actually believe the replies on here 🤣🤣🤣🙈🙈
I'm going to get eaten alive as I got my dd an actual dressing table (yes that's correct, a dressing table, not a desk with drawers and a mirror although I'm not actually sure of the difference 🤔) for her 3rd birthday! Shock horror!
She always wanted to sit at mine to get her hair done in the morning and to brush it after her bath but I didn't like her having access to all my stuff especially hair straighteners etc so I got her one for her room. Only really used for hair but she does sometimes do drawing on it too.
Of course she has loads of toys but like OP most of her toys are downstairs. Upstairs is only really cuddly toys and fancy dress and a train set.
Honestly baffled by these responses 🤯

Scutterbug · 03/03/2025 21:47

I would buy an adult one. It will grow with her then.

rejectedprincess · 03/03/2025 21:53

The replies here are crazy! My 7 yr old daughter has a proper full sized dressing table as I wanted something that would last rather than a child’s / toy one. I bought the Ikea Hemnes one and it’s perfect.

When my DD moved into her new bedroom, aged 5, we got her this - pretty sure it was a lot cheaper than the current sale price at Great little trading company!

https://www.gltc.co.uk/products/sweetheart-dressing-table-stool-set-aqua-polka-dot

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126650788013

It's a nice place for her to sit doing crafty things mainly and for storing bits and bins such as hair bands clips, beads/jewellry rtc.
She usually has the mirror down but occasionally uses it.

However she has a desk downstairs where she does art stuff/hw. I'd say it's a bit small to use as a proper desk.

Looks lovely and think will be useful for another couple of years.

For longevity maybe better to have a bigger desk type table and maybe add a nice dressing table mirror etc to it ?

Great Little Trading Company dressing table & stool, used but great condition. | eBay

Children's sweetheart dressing table and stool. Used but in great condition. The legs are solid wood. White table and stool with small pink hearts on the table top. Fully assembled. Collection only.

It’s not incredibly sad at all - you are being ridiculous.
Her bedroom is for relaxation, reading, sleeping and listening to her Yoto player. Plus she doesn’t play in it anyway as always wants to be downstairs wherever we are.
Ok so if I’d have asked for recommendations for a desk and chair (that would go in front of a mirror that’s on the wall in her bedroom already, say) that would be acceptable? Or is it inappropriate for 6 year olds to have mirrors in their bedrooms now too?

Edited

Look I don't really give a shit what you buy your kid. Why not get her a fake tan booth at the same time. Fill your boots.
I stand by it being incredibly sad though. She's six and you're looking for something for her room that is entirely for the purpose of prettyfication. She hasn't even had a chance to reach puberty yet. A desk, with or without a mirror, that is also about a space for creativity and learning is a completely different beast than a dressing table, which is only about her looks.

In your narrow mind, yes. But in reality what it actually is for, is a space for her to do her hair, draw etc. and store her things. A desk, chair and mirror IS THE SAME THING as a dressing table 🤦🏼‍♀️ I said dressing table because that’s what I’d call a desk, chair and mirror. You can twist it how you like but that is what it will be used for. You clearly don’t like the idea of girls having access to mirrors as I assume you wouldn’t have had a problem if I’d have said a desk and stool.

But now you mention it, a fake tan booth is a great idea to give her a bit of colour after this long winter. Thanks!

Happy to have helped.
How depressing that thinking a little girl is more than just her looks is considered narrow minded.

How depressing that you can’t see that not everyone is the same. You are very narrow minded to assume my daughter would be using it solely for the ‘purpose of prettyfication’. You don’t know her, but should give her and other girls more credit. They can want to look in the mirror to do their hair AND draw, read, play…..

@WhichLevis I hear you! My DD uses her desk with mirror to do her hair for school and doing her polo shirt buttons up.

She’d go in with a bed head if she couldn’t see what she was doing!

All part of learning self care which is important for all children. It’s not like she is putting rollers in and applying lipstick 😂
