...that, when someone uses to me just confirms that I am right. For example. Fun sponge. Pearl clutcher. Hand wringer.

Cleardays · 02/03/2025 07:14

Not heard the other two but agree about pearl clutcher.

GrandHighPoohbah · 02/03/2025 07:19

There are loads of expressions that live predominantly on MN that I hardly ever hear outside of it. CF, give your head a wobble, do you usually struggle with XYZ, HTH. I have to remind myself not to use them in real life!

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 02/03/2025 07:37

And mumsnet beliefs too.

Like self employed parents don't have to pay child maintenance.

Violashifts · 02/03/2025 07:50

Tinkly little laugh.

And often that unmarried people have right over someone else's house just because they've lived in it.

merrymelodies · 02/03/2025 08:02

"Spat out my tea all over the keyboard."

BlondiePortz · 02/03/2025 08:06

'Cool girls/mums' said by 14yo's I presume

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/03/2025 08:10

‘Why do you even care?’
‘No is a complete sentence.’

Both equally irritating!

EllipsisSynopsis · 02/03/2025 08:12

"You sound like hard work OP"

Devilsmommy · 02/03/2025 08:23

When someone shows you who they are, believe them. I know it's from Maya Angelou but I've only come across it on here and I'm doubtful everyone who uses it knows that

healthybychristmas · 02/03/2025 08:35

It's been used everywhere, that Maya Angelou saying.

It's been used everywhere, that Maya Angelou saying.

It's bloody useful too.

ChanelBoucle · 02/03/2025 08:38

Are you on glue?

Singularly the most annoying, trying-to-be-witty-but-failing-dismally expression.

merrymelodies · 02/03/2025 08:43

Get your ducks in a row.

lollydu · 02/03/2025 08:52

Cockweasel - I hate it so much, makes me cringe!!!

LochKatrine · 02/03/2025 08:55

I really hate "pearl clutcher" because it's so misogynist.
The word "grim" is over used.

Crichel · 02/03/2025 08:59

I think ‘fun sponge’ is pretty generic. I certainly used it of one of my SILs before I ever joined Mn.

I use it in real life-I don't think it matters if people don't know who said it first!

Get your ducks in a row.

You win, not the expression but I think the duck one is worse

CurlewKate · 02/03/2025 09:03

@Crichel "I think ‘fun sponge’ is pretty generic. I certainly used it of one of my SILs before I ever joined Mn."

I've heard it used in RL too. It's just on Mumsnet it's used as an attempt to shut down someone who doesn't agree with you. Usually about humour that is unkind or tasteless.

I actually think that's a good expression.

Justwanttocomment · 02/03/2025 09:05

There are so many! At the minute I can only think of odd. I just find it so condescending the way it is used on here.

PeskyRooks · 02/03/2025 09:13

Did you mean to be so rude?

No way would I say this in real life, so confrontational and what if they said "yes I did!"

Halloumiheaven · 02/03/2025 09:18

It's more the beliefs for me....

'leave him/end your marriage ' because husbands nans new boyfriend made a borderline offensive comment that could be construed as racist.

Everyone has had 'DS1 at 48 and DS2 at 52!' and that so totally normal.

Everyone has a 6 figure salary and sails through juggling said career with raising Timothy and Toby (whilst nearly 60- see above )

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 02/03/2025 07:37

And mumsnet beliefs too.

Like self employed parents don't have to pay child maintenance.

Is not that they don't have to pay CM, but it's far easier to hide income than if they are employed and therefore not pay.
