...that, when someone uses to me just confirms that I am right. For example. Fun sponge. Pearl clutcher. Hand wringer.

Just thought of another one. People being "baffled" by things. It always comes tinged with superiority.

Is not that they don't have to pay CM, but it's far easier to hide income than if they are employed and therefore not pay.

Well say that instead then. Not that they don't have to pay.

LochKatrine · 02/03/2025 09:26

I am sick of "naice".

Halloumiheaven · 02/03/2025 09:29

Oh and faux confusion or not understanding or a passive aggressive sarcastic response when someone has DARED to slip a spelling mistake in there or use incorrect grammar!

rumred · 02/03/2025 09:30

Used to see 'fuck the fuck off to the farside of fuck' . Rarely seen now sadly.
Also 'cheeky fucker' . It's a gem. And 'not my circus not my monkeys'.

My lexicon has expanded thanks to mn.

SemperIdem · 02/03/2025 09:32

I don’t think they’re so much “Mumsnet” sayings, as turns of phrase which stand out more because they’re less familiar to us due to where we live etc

B1indEye · 02/03/2025 09:33

merrymelodies · 02/03/2025 08:43

Get your ducks in a row.

That's is so not a Mumsnet expression, its been around for ages and is used by all kinds of people

HTH

OneForTheRoadThen · 02/03/2025 09:41

Vanishingly small. Never hear that in actual life.

I hear this a lot at work.

That's a good point.

Yes, I remember a manager saying this at work about 25 years ago.

theboffinsarecoming · 02/03/2025 09:45

PFB.

That's one I have only ever come across on here.

Almost everything that's been posted so far is a standardly used phrase

There's seems to be a misconception that if a poster hasn't seen it anywhere else it's unique to here

There will be some things that came from a specific thread but not many

Yes, I think that you're right. I once saw someone use a phrase from the Bible, and another poster dismissing it as "peak MN".

Printedword · 02/03/2025 09:49

I also think we see more 'red flags' and 'narcissists' on here than one might expect

CurlewKate · 02/03/2025 09:53

I wasn't suggesting that the phrases I quoted only appear on Mumsnet-sorry, I didn't make myself clear. What I was trying to say is that they are phrases that when used about me on Mumsnet confirms to me that I am in the right.🤣

I'm not sure what you mean, @CurlewKate (genuinely!). Is it that these phrases confirm an opinion that you hold of the poster?

I use that fairly frequently, and it certainly predates my arrival on Mn. I agree about much of the Mn lexicon being fairly standard, though as someone not from the UK, I’ve certainly learned unfamiliar regional expressions from parts of the UK I’ve never lived in. Stuff like ‘to have a cob on’ or ‘looking a bit black over Bill’s mother’s way’.

Ah, ok, I hadn’t understood that.

ETA I get called a ‘cool wife’ for having unproblematic longterm friendships with men, and not having hysterics about DH going for a drink with a female friend. I’m tired of pointing out the origins of the term.

To be fair, i don't think I've ever seen any one claim they don't have to pay. Just that you're less likely to get any.

Mind you, the CMS aren't particularly good at getting money from anyone in my experience.

MrsGusset · 02/03/2025 10:10

I've never understood what “unmumsnetty hugs” are.

LuckyCharmz · 02/03/2025 10:13

Cocklodger.

MoonWoman69 · 02/03/2025 10:15

Naice
LTB
Hand hold (who says that to anyone irl?!)
Kindly...
The last one pisses me off! 9/10 out of ten, there's nothing "kindly" about what follows on!

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 02/03/2025 10:15

Cocklodger. Forgot myself and said it to my friend, she was like “what the hell is that?!” 🤣
