Too much is coming together - the set up in the White House, the minerals deal, the announcement of yet another examination of where military aid went to (despite the previous ones), the endless questioning of not holding elections despite that being in Ukraine's constitution, the cosying up to Russia, a number of other aspects.

I suspect this has been the game plan all along.

'Interesting' news that China and Russia are trying to hire the fired Federal employees.

Trump will discuss on Monday the possible suspension or complete cancellation of military aid to Ukraine, including weapons previously paid for by the Biden administration β€” The New York Times

Fuck, that's very worrying.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 03/03/2025 10:24

Can Trump single handedly reverse that decision though? Legally I mean.

Can Trump single handedly reverse that decision though? Legally I mean.

He seems to be able to do what he wants but even if he cannot stop the Biden stuff, he can stop any future deliveries.

I sincerely hope Starmer et al can change his mind on all of this.... for all our sakes, not just Ukraine.

@Alexandra2001

"On defence spend going forward, whether other countries do or don't increase, the UK has too, its irrelevant what countries with very small armed forces do"

I fully agree that the UK needs to increase its defence budget regardless of what other countries do. But I don't think that it's irrelevant firstly because every contribution helps and having a greater number of European countries contributing real military aid (rather than words) sends a message to the Russians that Europe is united .

Secondly I noticed on another thread a number of posters objecting to the increase in the defence budget. It will be easier to get the UK public support for this if other European countries are doing the same.

Bagpussnotbothered · 03/03/2025 12:02

Interesting post from Paul Krugman on Substack: "It's Up To Europe Now."

He asserts that Europe has the capability and finances to step up - what matters is the political will. I think - judging from yesterday's meeting at Lancaster House - the answer is "yes."

We'll see.

BBC News reporting that a Trump-Putin summit of being β€œfast tracked” and that discussions on ending the war in Ukraine will β€œtake a back seat in place of potentially lucrative US-Russia economic deals”. Apparently such β€œdeals” are already being tabled behind closed doors.

Igotjelly · 03/03/2025 12:15

In other words fuck Ukraine if it can make the US some money. Absolutely shameful.

I think I can not get more disgusted with Trump but then he proves me wrong by doing or saying something even more disgusting.

Europe β€œmust take on greater responsibility for the security of the continent.”
β€œIt’s a paradox, listen to how it sounds: 500 million Europeans ask 300 million Americans to protect them from 140 million Russians. If you can count, then count on yourself!” Tusk emphasized.

The head of the Polish government emphasized that Europe currently has a β€œdeficit of imagination and courage.”
He drew attention to the fact that the army of European countries, including Ukraine, numbers 2.6 million, the United States – 1.3 million, China – 2 million, and Russia – 1.1 million.
β€œEurope has an advantage over everyone,” Tusk stated.
He added that the situation is the same with fighter jets: Europe together with Ukraine has 2,091, the USA has 1,456, China has 1,409, and Russia has 1,224.
Tusk: Europe must guarantee peace through its strength, not Ukraine's capitulation

Good topical podcast here from The Rest is Politics examining a post US and Europe alliance and how the West can address our defence going forward. Quite a bit more optimistic than the current situation. Gives us hope.

Live:Ukraine

The United Kingdom and France, together with Ukraine, will work on a peace plan to be presented to the U.S.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this, adding that β€œone or two more countries” may also join the initiative. Starmer emphasized that, despite his rhetoric and stance toward Zelensky, Trump wants to see lasting peace in Ukraine.

β€œIf an agreement is to be reached, it must be defended. The worst possible outcome would be a temporary pause, only for Putin to return. We must ensure that this is a long-term agreement, not just a brief pause,” Starmer stated.

Slovak Prime Minister Fico demands a decision on resuming Russian gas transit through Ukraine at the March 6 EU summit, threatening to block the summit’s conclusions otherwise.

He reiterated that Slovakia will not support Ukraine β€œeither financially or militarily to prolong the war” and claimed that Kyiv β€œwill never be strong enough to negotiate from a position of military strength.”

❗️IAEA Observers Rotated at Zaporizhzhia NPP via Russian-Occupied Territories Without Ukraine’s Consent

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a note of protest to the IAEA leadership, condemning the violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Kyiv had proposed a safe and legal rotation route, but Moscow refused to guarantee the safety of IAEA personnel if they used it. As a result, the rotation was delayed by 80 days.

β–ͺ️Russian forces occupied the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in early March 2022, and it has since been under their control. An IAEA mission has been present at the plant since September 2022.

Zelensky has arrived at the summit in London dedicated to Ukraine. Macron, Meloni, Scholz, and other European leaders have also already arrived

Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, stated that the U.S. needs a Ukrainian leader who is ready to ensure a lasting peace with Russiaβ€” and it remains unclear whether Volodymyr Zelensky is prepared for that.

When asked whether Trump wants Zelensky to resign, Waltz responded:

β€œIf it becomes clear that President Zelensky’s personal or political motives diverge from his commitment to ending hostilities in his country, then I think we have a real problem.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that Ukraine might need a different leader if Zelensky fails to meet U.S. demands.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK government will provide Ukraine with approximately $2 billion through the UK Export Finance program to purchase over 5,000 air defense missiles.

Keir Starmer outlined four key points that world leaders agreed upon at the London summit:

◼️ Continue providing military assistance to Ukraine as long as the war persists and increase economic pressure on Russia.

◼️ Any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. Ukraine must be at the table in any peace negotiations.

◼️ In the event of a peace agreement, European leaders will work to deter any future Russian invasion of Ukraine.

◼️ A β€œcoalition of the willing” will be established to protect Ukraine and guarantee peace in the country.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡ΏCzech volunteers raised €2.8 million for a Black Hawk military helicopter for Ukraine

The Czech initiative β€œA Gift for Putin” began collecting funds for the helicopter in November 2023, but the campaign significantly slowed down after a few months. Organizers attribute this to pressure from individuals claiming that Ukraine does not need this helicopter.

After discussing the matter with representatives of Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR), the volunteers decided to try to complete the fundraiser. Eventually, they found a helicopter outside Europe that is slightly cheaper and newer than the one they initially planned to purchase.

πŸ’₯ Overnight, the Bashneft oil refinery in Ufa, Russia, was on fire.

According to Russian Telegram channels, explosions were heard around 2 a.m., followed by a blaze.

The head of the Ordzhonikidzevsky district administration in Ufa, Rustem Khamitov, confirmed the fire, stating that there have been no reports of casualties.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported shooting down seven drones in the Lipetsk, Rostov, and Belgorod regions but did not mention the refinery in Ufa.

Overnight, Russians attacked an eco-park in the suburbs of Kharkiv.

As a result of the shelling, enclosures were destroyed, and animals were killed. Reports indicate that the strike hit near the petting zoo.

Tragedy at the Training Ground: Ukrainian Ground Forces Unit Hit by a Missile on March 1

There are casualties and injuries following a missile strike on a Ukrainian Ground Forces unit.

Commander of the β€œKhortytsia” Operational-Strategic Group, Mykhailo Drapaty, stated that β€œwe are witnessing untimely decisions and unlearned lessons” and assured that he is personally overseeing the investigation. Authorities are currently verifying details and establishing the circumstances of the incident.

Journalist Yuriy Butusov reported that Russians struck a training ground in Dnipropetrovsk region with a missile, killing over 30 people and injuring 130 others. According to him, the 168th Reserve Battalion was stationed at the site, with nearly all soldiers being those who had returned from SZCH (self-sustained combat missions).

Blogger and volunteer Serhiy Sternenko claimed that a Russian reconnaissance drone corrected the strike.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that an Iskander-M missile system targeted what it alleged were locations of Ukraine’s 157th Mechanized Brigade.

*Over the past week, Russia has launched more than 1,050 attack drones, nearly 1,300 aerial bombs, and over 20 missiles at Ukraine.

Approximately 620,000 Russian troops are stationed in the occupied territories of Ukraine and in Russia’s Kursk region, according to Vadym Skibitskyi, Deputy Chief of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR).*

Over 200,000 of them are assault units actively engaged in combat. 35,000 troops from the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya) are responsible for securing key facilities and enforcing the occupation regime.

Skibitskyi noted that Russia has no issues replenishing its forces, as recruitment targets for January were exceeded by 107%.

Currently, Moscow’s priority areas are Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, and Kupiansk.

Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that he is the only U.S. president who has not given any Ukrainian territory to Putin’s Russia.

In a separate post, he wrote that β€œtomorrow night will be big,” without providing further details.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Zelensky spoke with Ukrainian and British press following the London summit. Here’s what he said:

◼️ The best security guarantees are a strong Ukrainian army, NATO membership, and a foreign military presence in Ukraine. The presence of the U.S. in this contingent is crucial.

◼️ The U.S. and Europe are Ukraine’s strategic partners. Many agreements have been reached among European allies. In the coming weeks, countries will announce them once there is a clear framework for Ukraine’s security guarantees.

◼️ Kyiv will never recognize occupied territories as Russian. Dividing land by force is not a peace agreement but a risk of another Russian invasion. A ceasefire cannot be effectively controlled.

◼️ Ukraine and the U.S. have strong partnership ties that have strengthened since the full-scale war began. Relations with Trump can be rebuilt constructively. The Oval Office incident did not bring any positives. Ukraine deserves an equal dialogue.

β€œIt is wrong that the question of ending the war is dictated by an unknown strategy,” Zelensky said regarding U.S. actions. He added that softer rhetoric from the U.S. will not make Putin more flexible.

◼️ The minerals agreement is ready. It can be signed by ministers, but the U.S. may need time to finalize a decision.

◼️ Ukraine is grateful to the UK for its support, including to King Charles III.

Photos hopefully to follow!
