The man cough

It’s just gone 11pm here. DH has been doing the hacking man cough at full symphonic volume for the past 20 minutes and shows no sign of stopping. Water has been offered. No coughing before this. He says he hasn’t choked or misswallowed (he can speak fine, between the coughs).

Is it horrid of me to dread this going on all night?

And is there anything we can do to stop it? We don’t have any cough syrup.

Do you have an inhaler you could use? I find that helps open the airways when I get a coughing fit. Or cough sweets?

Thanks @adviceonchildplease

We don’t have an inhaler or cough sweets. DH banged his foot and moaned about it very loudly for an hour or so, refusing all offers of practical help, and this meant that he forgot to cough.

Do you have any cocodamol in the house? That can suppress a cough and was the only thing that helped me the last couple of weeks. Granted, I never tried banging my foot though. 😂 Honey supposedly helps, too.

I feel your pain OP. My partner when ill has to be practically held down and paracetamol forced down his throat. And then will only take one. We have a small child and when I’m ill I have to get on with it.

i say to him why wouldn’t you want to do something to help yourself feel better…..and then I'm like, oh yes, hang on 🙄

Spare room?

Itsaswelltime · 28/02/2025 09:33

We don’t have a spare room, (tiny city flat), we have paracetamol and stronger painkillers, but, of course, he won’t take them. He is currently in bed grumbling about an upset stomach while scrolling on his phone; we were supposed to leave for a ‘Lovely day out’ 30 minutes ago (we can still go but it will take him at least an hour to get from bed to ready to leave), postponed from yesterday when he also felt ill in the morning. He won’t take any of the stomach medicines I’ve suggested. Or go to the doctor.
