Car help - top engine rebuild cost

Coffeedreaming · 27/02/2025 18:14

Our car has conked out today. Garage has sent us a video saying the top engine needs rebuilding but not said how much and have now gone home.

Anyone have any ideas on cost? I won’t sleep tonight 😩

The car is 9 years old and get it fully serviced regularly. Was serviced by this same garage in November. Should they have picked up that things would blow soon?

Car probably worth £5-6k - a 7 seater VW

Engine change average 3 to 4k.

We always say weigh up if you think you can buy a reliable car.for the cost if the repair on your current one.
Also depends if one if the ancillaries that come off current engine and swapped to new one is the cause of the failure.

Also no a garage wouldn't pick anything up on a service. And even if you had a vehicle health check it could be fine at point of check but have an issue a week later.

Maybe get a 2nd opinion

Top end rebuild? Between 1k and 3k. Depends on damage. Cam belt gone, could have mangled valves. Big bill. Head gasket gone, moderate bill.

Had you had cambelt done. What's the milage. Cars average 100k or 10 years for one to be changed whichever comes first. But this can vary model to model.
I've just had my 9 year old car done at 90k

Oh jeez. These numbers are making me feel sick

We’ll have to find the money somewhere as we can’t afford a new car and we absolutely need a car. We have a disabled child to get to school

The bloody car cost us £1000 in December after a leak caused water to get in the electrics
