Legendary Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their Santa Fe home.
The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog. Local media has reported that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman had just turned 95 in late January. He was known for being a reclusive person, having not starred in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe 'Eagle' Cole in the political satire Welcome to Mooseport.
Born in California on January 30 1930, the actor had enlisted in the army after lying about his age at 16, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After moving back to California following his military service, he decided to pursue acting after briefly living in New York.
RIP

Superb actor.

He was a brilliant actor.

His wife was also a brilliant concert pianist. And so young to die. 🥺

Just read this on Twitter/X, how upsetting. 😢 Not gonna speculate on what happened as it's a bit ghoulish, but the police say there was no foul play. He is 95, which is a really good age to live to, but she was only 63. 😢And the dog too. 😢 Awwwww, this is really sad. ❤

Sad news but why is it dominating every news site?

As with the Liam Payne story, it's disproportionate coverage - these are somewhat obscure celebrities. Or is that callous?

yes ,callous .

crumblingschools · 27/02/2025 10:21

Loved him in The Poseidon Adventure

DMCWelshcakes · 27/02/2025 10:21

I loved him in The Birdcage. It's one of my favourite films.

The tragedy of this is Betsy Arakawa though - 63 is too young, and her name and achievements are being overlooked.

Gene Hackman was not an 'obscure celebrity.' Good grief. What a daft, ignorant comment. Hmm I'm embarrassed for you!

Liam Payne was not an 'obscure celebrity' either!' Have you ever actually switched on a TV or a radio, or been to the cinema.......? Like ever?! 😬

Or is this some half-baked, lame attempt to try to appear 'cool' and 'edgy' and 'superior' to other posters, by pretending you haven't heard of most mainstream celebrities? 😆

His poor wife, only 63.

Wanted to know if I was the only one. Maybe I need to be 50+ to know who he is, it seems like he hasn't been in much in the last 25 years.

If you only watch movies made in the last 25 years you are really missing out. The early 70s is considered one of Hollywood's golden ages. Have you honestly never heard of The French Connection?

Forgot about the Poseidon film. Must rewatch that.
Sad news.

The Poseidon Adventure is one of my DS1s favourite films. He's just shy of 15 and went through an obsession with Titanic and Poseidon Adventure. It was tremendously cheesy and terrific fun and i think we watched it at least 15 times over the course of a couple of weeks. He will be very sad at the news.

My favourites of his- Mississippi Burning; Runaway Jury.

RIP Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa and their Ddog. How incredibly sad. Thanks

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 27/02/2025 10:03

@ThatMerryReader Any reason why you refuse to believe it could be carbon monoxide poisoning?

If that was the case then the police would have reported it.
And if that was the case, then foul play comes automatically back into the equation as it is necessary to establish whether the gas was released accidentally or purposefully by one of them or somebody else.

If there's no foul play could it be something like carbon monoxide poisoning?

When they say no "foul play" do they mean that there is no third party involvement?

Or Superman?
.... not putting it in the same league necessarily, but GH is brilliant in everything!
And actually the very first Superman was really good!

Bloom15 · 27/02/2025 10:39

Saw this - very sad. I wondered about carbon monoxide too. Loved him in Crimson Tide. His poor wife was no age

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 10:39

the police can't report carbon monoxide poisoning without proof.

ScribblingPixie · 27/02/2025 10:40

And The Conversation is a masterpiece.

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 10:40

Mississippi Burning was an Excellent film, unforgettable

AInightingale · 27/02/2025 10:41

I don't dispute his 'legendariness' though it's pretty obvious from some people mixing him up with Gene Wilder that he'll be a bit obscure to the younger generation - hadn't made a movie for 25 years - but my comment was more in relation to our news media and its priorities!

Exactly this. They will need a coroner to sign off on it I would assume. But the 'no foul play' is a pretty good hint IMO. Like when there is a murder suicide it's reported as 'The police are not looking for any other people in the investigation'.

In any case, it's just dreadfully sad.

Yes, I believe so.

mrpenny · 27/02/2025 10:47

Have we mentioned Enemy of the State? So prescient with the development of A1. Think I’ve watched this over twenty times and always find something new in his performance. I can only feel sorry for those implying that his death is insignificant unless you are over 50.

SylviasShoes · 27/02/2025 10:48

Sadly, I suspect a suicide pact perhaps because he could have been seriously ill.

The mean it wasn't murder

Not until the autopsy confirmed it.

Could also be some other misadventure eg one drowning trying to save the other, accidental overdose, allergic reactions etc (though these are less likely to also affect the dog).

NebulousDogBollocking · 27/02/2025 10:51

Was it in The French Connection that GH's character was made to become addicted to heroin? I would have been quite young when I saw it but that's the one memory I have of it.

SirRaymondClench · 27/02/2025 10:53

The ignorance of some people on this thread reminds me of when David Bowie died and one of my colleagues said she'd never heard of him. She was in her 50s at the time of his death.
Maybe people need to stop watching vacuous shit like Love Island and Made in Chelsea and actually watch some classic films.
