Legendary Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their Santa Fe home.
The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog. Local media has reported that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman had just turned 95 in late January. He was known for being a reclusive person, having not starred in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe 'Eagle' Cole in the political satire Welcome to Mooseport.
Born in California on January 30 1930, the actor had enlisted in the army after lying about his age at 16, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After moving back to California following his military service, he decided to pursue acting after briefly living in New York.
RIP

Superb actor.

Wanted to know if I was the only one. Maybe I need to be 50+ to know who he is, it seems like he hasn't been in much in the last 25 years.

I’m 40 and I know who he is.

Fair enough if you don’t, though it surprises me, there are celebrities deaths which have been reported and I’ve thought Who? but I went to Google to inform myself rather than post on a thread mourning their death. Anyway he was an excellent actor. You should check out his films.

I thought you were being funny! Oops.

No, just a twit and muddling my Gene's up! Although my Johnny Depp point still stands.

Sad news for his remaining family, but to be honest , 95 is a good age to achieve. He has left a legacy of great films behind.

Edited

His wife was 63.

Kayemm · 27/02/2025 09:54

My 3 children, 28, 31 and 36 would all put The Quick and the Dead as one of their favourite films.

But I don't regard a film made in 1995 as old! 😀

bombastix · 27/02/2025 09:55

Great actor. He had a lot of energy on the screen.

Mississippi Burning hasn't been mentioned but he was excellent in that.

If there's no foul play could it be something like carbon monoxide poisoning?

That was exactly what I thought, too.

Very sad, whatever the cause. He was a fantastic actor.

whatonearthisgoingonnow · 27/02/2025 09:44

Never heard of him, don't think I've seen anything he's in.

You've never seen any of the Christopher Reeve Superman Films?

Epli · 27/02/2025 09:55

beguilingeyes · 27/02/2025 09:52

No you don't. It's bloody awful.

I love it!

Oh so sad. I might watch 'Conversation' today, a superb film.

That was the one in my mind too. Wonderful film.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/02/2025 09:56

I also thought carbon monoxide as well.

SheilaFentiman · 27/02/2025 09:59

I don't think any story ever 'dominates' news sites now, unless it is one with rolling live updates eg US election. It is one or two of many headlines in one or two sections. Maybe it's the first headline, for now, but it is unlikely to be so for long.

How odd that a 95-year-old hadn't acted much in the last 25 years.

If you never watch old films because you've tried them and decided only modern films float your boat, fair enough, I suppose, but if you've never even tried to watch any of the classics you are missing out.

Police reports foul play was not a factor.
Come on, what are the chances that two people and a dog all die spontaneously? Give me a break.

No foul play doesn't mean it wasn't a suicide pact.

Not fair to say that.
Like PPs have said carbon monoxide is a deadly, but silent, killer - it's why CO alarms are as important as smoke alarms in my opinion.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 27/02/2025 10:03

@ThatMerryReader Any reason why you refuse to believe it could be carbon monoxide poisoning?

Even with poster suggestions about how this can happen, you are still quite hard of thinking, aren't you?

longtompot · 27/02/2025 10:04

Such sad news. I wonder if it was carbon monoxide poisoning, to take all three of them.
I loved him in quite a few of the films he was in, especially Enemy of the State.
RIP Mr Hackman, Betsy & their dog

The man was in everything from A Bridge Too Far and Bonnie and Clyde to Get Shorty and The Birdcage.

Gritty police dramas like The French Connection, westerns like Unforgiven and The Quick And The Dead, spy thrillers, comedies, courtroom dramas… Two Oscars and three more nominations.

Your poor knowledge of films does not make a giant of cinema any less of a colossus.

AInightingale · 27/02/2025 09:31

Sad news but why is it dominating every news site?

As with the Liam Payne story, it's disproportionate coverage - these are somewhat obscure celebrities. Or is that callous?

Gene Hackman an obscure celebrity!!!

He was a world class actor who appeared in a myriad of good films.

he was 95 and his wife 63

This struck me. He was at least 60 or 61 and. A Hollywood powerhouse when he married the 30 year old Betsy Arakawa. And the BBC article (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cewkkkvkzn9o) saddened me as the wife is hardly acknowledged (yes he was a famous actor but come on! She was a human being with her own life and achievements am sure. More than a footnote surely). It always saddens me when one is reduced simply to X's spouse, ex, gf/bf. Sadly happens to women more than men

Imagine being over 50 😲 😱

Imdb is a great site, beware of falling into a black hole though... looking up one person leads to a movie, another person, a TV show... ad infinitum... and before you know it 2 hours have gone by.

Not AI 🙄

I copied and pasted from the Daily Mail article.

Tbf the DM probably uses AI.

Just because you personally have never heard of someone that doesn't mean they're obscure. Educate yourself.

Ifeelabnormal · 27/02/2025 10:16

How absolutely tragic
