Legendary Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their Santa Fe home.
The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog. Local media has reported that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman had just turned 95 in late January. He was known for being a reclusive person, having not starred in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe 'Eagle' Cole in the political satire Welcome to Mooseport.
Born in California on January 30 1930, the actor had enlisted in the army after lying about his age at 16, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After moving back to California following his military service, he decided to pursue acting after briefly living in New York.
RIP

Superb actor.

How sad. He was great actor. If the dog died too and it’s not foul play, must be some kind of poisoning. Unless it’s a v weird coincidence.

True.

Sorry Mrs Hackman.

Her name was Arakawa.

At 95? That would take some doing.

Sorry - I seem to have quoted the wrong poster.

CarrieMoonbeams · 27/02/2025 09:04

@LunaNorth , I know, I edited my post as not only was it a bit insensitive, but also I realised probably unlikely.

He will forever be Popeye Doyle to me.

SofaSpuds · 27/02/2025 09:20

Saw this news this morning, so sad 😞 He was great! I especially loved his slimy character in...(ah can't remember the name... movie with Tom Cruise, Jeanne Triplehorn, book by John Grisham.....)
The Firm

This comment in the article stock me though...

He was 95 for God's sake! Who is surprised he was "reclusive" and hasn't acted since 2004? He was mid seventies then!

RIP Gene, Betsy, and their DDog 😔

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 09:21

i agree @SofaSpuds
he retired at 75 or thereabouts
good for him!

paradisecityx · 27/02/2025 09:22

Carbon monoxide? Very sad 😢

EscapeTheCastle · 27/02/2025 09:24

Love him in The Quick and the Dead. Made a great bad guy.
In his younger years he was very attractive, very manly.

Sad news for his remaining family, but to be honest , 95 is a good age to achieve. He has left a legacy of great films behind.

Edited

His wife was only 63...

A quote I read today said basically that he’d taken to acting to act, not to deal with agents, publicity, the media, all the Hollywood razzamatazz.

Lentilweaver · 27/02/2025 09:29

Sorry, I see you updated.
I also dont think he was reclusive. He simply moved to Santa Fe and retired in his mid 70s.

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 09:29

i dont think i have ever seen the Royal Tenenbaums, i need to see it

AInightingale · 27/02/2025 09:31

Sad news but why is it dominating every news site?

As with the Liam Payne story, it's disproportionate coverage - these are somewhat obscure celebrities. Or is that callous?

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 09:33

i think wikipaedia page has been hacked, bit odd - now rectified!

i am guessing his neighbours, or children organised some sort of welfare check

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 09:34

@AInightingale
he is a legend, not an obscure celebrity

because he was a huge star and considered by many to be the finest screen actor in the world.

Gene Hackman is not an obscure celebrity!
He's a legend - just because he was old, doesn't mean his death doesn't warrant press coverage.

I'm old too (not 95 though!) so pop music, and OD, means nothing to me. Still I'd say Liam Payne's death was big news - he was in one of the biggest boy bands of all time, he was young, and it was a traumatic death. RIP Liam .

ChessorBuckaroo · 27/02/2025 09:40

One of the true greats.

Lex Luthor in Superman I and II, Poseidon Adventure, Mississippi Burning, just some of the roles that I loved him for.

RIP.

You are showing astonishing ignorance. Hackman is legit one of the greats.

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 09:42

indeed @ChessorBuckaroo he was one of the true greats
