Legendary Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their Santa Fe home.
The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog. Local media has reported that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman had just turned 95 in late January. He was known for being a reclusive person, having not starred in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe 'Eagle' Cole in the political satire Welcome to Mooseport.
Born in California on January 30 1930, the actor had enlisted in the army after lying about his age at 16, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After moving back to California following his military service, he decided to pursue acting after briefly living in New York.
RIP

Superb actor.

Some people apparently watch too much true crime. The amount of speculation on this thread based on nothing, is horrible.

Edited

Get over it. This is an online forum, in case you hadn’t realised. Are you that naive to think there wouldn’t be speculation about his death when you clicked in the thread?

So you're fine with speculation on suicide pacts, Dignitas, accusing his wife of murdering him?

Look, online forums clearly aren’t for you, so maybe it’s time for you to leave this thread.

I haven’t seen anything on this thread about Dignitas or accusing his wife of murdering him, but perhaps I missed it.

A suicide pact was mentioned early on before more details emerged about the locations.

there is bound to be speculation,
all over the internet and on the streets

Just because you’re happy to take part in lurid speculation about someone’s death doesn’t mean that others don’t have the right to call it out for what it is.

Maybe online forums aren’t for you if you don’t like being called out. So maybe you should leave this thread…

whatever it is very sad and i will remind myself of his skill and watch some of his films

Jesus. There’s speculation and then there’s this thread.

On the news this morning they’re saying that they’re not ruling out fowl play.

Oh god, it was chickens?

when there's so much detailed information coming out from the authorities as to what they found at the house, position of bodies etc, it's unsurprising that people are speculating.

some speculation is normal. A load of different posters saying things like “I think that x happened then y happened” and others posting their own theories really isn’t. Not on your average discussion forum anyway.

The whole thing sounds dodgy and the authorities seem to think that there was fowl play which is very sad if that was the case.

julios · 28/02/2025 08:54

foul not fowl 🐓🐓🐓🤣🤣

HelenWheels · 28/02/2025 08:56

Authorities reported no signs of injury but deemed the deaths "suspicious enough" to investigate and have not ruled out foul play. No cause of death was given.

from the BBC

HelenWheels · 28/02/2025 09:02

The search warrant concluded that the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation”.
“All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation,” the sheriff, Adan Mendoza of Santa Fe county, told the Santa Fe New Mexican.
from The Guardian

As with the Bayesian yacht sinking, we must take care not to read too much into wordings, especially in other jurisdictions. In italy, the prosecutors needed to make members of the crew “suspects” to have the authority to interview them in a certain way etc, it didn’t mean what it does here or that they had been arrested on suspicion of…

It sounds possibly like the US police have to demonstrate a basis for the search warrant (given there is no owner to give permission) and the wording of that includes “suspicious”.

My understanding is that the preliminary autopsies showed no wounds etc but toxicology and other reports will take a few days.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 28/02/2025 09:15

@Never2many I think I get what you are saying, it's not the speculation per se but some of the depths of detail feel a bit ott. Kinda like the Nicola Bulley threads.

HelenWheels · 28/02/2025 09:16

why do the police release so much information to the media?

I've been on various forums since the 90s, but I should leave because I don't agree with some posters speculating that his wife murdered him?

From a PP

Sorry but I think this was their own version of Dignitas.
For someone aged 95 I think that's more credible than something wrong with their heating system. And yes, ok, his wife was younger.
My thoughts say drugs, drink or a combo of several things.

HelenWheels · 28/02/2025 09:25

i hardly think his wife would kill him

You would think, but several people mentioned it could be murder/suicide.

So people are seriously bothered by speculation like that - really? A couple due roughly at the same time, one a frail 95 year old. It’s a credible theory.

CalicoPusscat · 28/02/2025 09:43

We won't know any more for while, if ever

Yes.
Or not open threads about ongoing investigations

You dont think she'd wait until he was comfortable in bed? You think she'd do it on the floor of the mud room?
