Legendary Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their Santa Fe home.
The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog. Local media has reported that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman had just turned 95 in late January. He was known for being a reclusive person, having not starred in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe 'Eagle' Cole in the political satire Welcome to Mooseport.
Born in California on January 30 1930, the actor had enlisted in the army after lying about his age at 16, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After moving back to California following his military service, he decided to pursue acting after briefly living in New York.
RIP

Superb actor.

Where is the information about if being two weeks? I thought that the time of death hadn’t been determine/announced yet?

I mean there's decomposition and mummification, it doesn't sound recent does it?

I don’t know - I know that Betsy was lying next to a heater and I don’t know if it was on or not and I don’t know how quick a process like that would be.

PoliteTaupeLeader · 27/02/2025 21:42

Some workers had seen them alive two weeks ago.

The mummification might be to do with climate. They're in New Mexico.

SheilaFentiman · 27/02/2025 21:46

This statement reported on by CNN said the deaths were “days earlier” but obviously that’s preliminary

I think she may have died in her sleep, (heart attack, stroke, embolism) and no one was around to take care of her husband and dogs.
2 dogs are said to have survived

Very, very sad

She was collapsed on the bathroom floor, so I doubt she died in her sleep unless she slept on the bathroom floor. And Gene was laying out in another room as if he had fallen. It's in DM link in this thread.

Ok, so not in her sleep. The rest still stands.

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 22:13

quite unlikely that she simply lay down on the bathroom floor and died.
he was 95 so could easily have fallen and died.
she had prescription medication strewn around her
all very odd

Why is it unlikely?

She could have felt ill, gone to the bathroom to get some medication, collapsed and died.

westisbest1982 · 27/02/2025 22:29

Surely the fact they both died at the same time is suspicious? And one of theirs dog died too? The dog was found in a closet.

Izzy393 · 27/02/2025 22:43

It’s all terribly grim and disturbing the more that comes out. More from his daughters here but not seen anything from his son yet

we don’t know that they died at precisely the same time. Possibly he died of a stroke or heart attack, she found him, decided to take pills in her grief, or took something to calm her down and took too much, falling in front of the closet and trapping the dog inside if.

It might have accidentally closed the door on itself or the closet could be bigger than we are imagining based on the size of the home.

Izzy393 · 27/02/2025 23:03

Unless she wasn’t well.. had taken pills and collapsed and he was trying to go out to find someone to raise the alarm and fell? He was found in the mudroom with cane and sunglasses nearby and front door was found unlocked/slightly ajar?

SheilaFentiman · 27/02/2025 23:04

All possibilities, yes.

Seems to be about same temps there as here. Maybe their heating was on high

If she had prescription medication that she was in the process of taking when she died, she probably had a health condition.

I would imagine Betsy sadly died unexpectedly and everyone else was reliant on her - Hackman fell while alone in another room in the house (just a fall is enough to kill a 95 year old) and the dog was unfortunately crated or shut in another room/walk in closet at the time.

VeryconfusedNana · 27/02/2025 23:15

It just goes to show that wealth means absolutely nothing when you can pass away and not be missed or found for days.

MyrtleLion · 27/02/2025 23:17

Chuchoter · 27/02/2025 19:49

@MyrtleLion sorry got your loss but your father was only 60, Gene Hackman was 95. That's a huge difference.

You've totally missed the point of my post.

No staff?

VictorianChic · 28/02/2025 00:12

I find the lack of staff unusual The wife must’ve been doing everything domestically.

I saw a post on another forum speculating that Gene fell/took ill in the mudroom. Betsy ran upstairs to get his medication, spilled it in a panic and, while bending to pick it up, either pulled the space heater down onto her head or smacked her head on the counter hard enough to knock herself out and died there from a TBI.

Never2many · 28/02/2025 08:15

Jesus. There’s speculation and then there’s this thread.

On the news this morning they’re saying that they’re not ruling out fowl play.

slashlover · 28/02/2025 08:19

Some people apparently watch too much true crime. The amount of speculation on this thread based on nothing, is horrible.
