John Lithgow as Dumbledore

John Lithgow has recently said he will be playing Dumbledore in the new HBO Harry Potter adaptation TV series

What do we think? He was good as Churchill in The Crown but is it a sign of things to come with lots of American actors playing the UK roles or is it a one off?

I don't know but, imo, He is a fine actor

He was excellent as the Trinity killer in a Dexter season and pretty good as Jud in the remade, dire, Pet Semetery

I've heard Paapa Essiedu's name for Snape, I don't think it's confirmed though

I think they’d do well to widen the pool. Get the job on talent and believability, not nationality. Personally I’d love to see Adam Driver as Snape, he’d be about the right age if we were being more true to the books. I did absolutely love AR as Snape though.

He's an excellent actor, can do whimsy as well too, look at him in 3rd rock from the sun, but the cold menacing roles he does are chilling, like Dexter or Cliffhanger

I read that with the original films JKR was determined to have an all British cast - I wonder why that hasn't been applied this time though John Lithgow is a great actor

He's a great choice.

My first thought was nooooo because I heard his American accent in my head but there's no reason he can't be an excellent Dumbledore. Attracting very high calibre international actors continues to demonstrate how uncancellable JK is which is a satisfying thing.

I'm really curious now as to what names will follow and what level of prestige they will be
