Finally passed 4th test! Never thought I could do it

Hi

Thought I'd post an update to my thread back in December about my disastrous first driving test, where I picked up 1 dangerous and 7 serious, plus driving faults. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/chat/5225548-disastrous-driving-test-yesterday

Also failed 2nd and 3rd tests, with fewer faults each time but still a couple of serious at least. My lovely driving instructor was adamant I was ready but the nerves kept getting to me. I would just have a top up lesson or two in between tests, but otherwise practiced a bit when I could. Used beta blockers from 2nd test. For the 3rd and 4th tests, I also listened to a self hypnosis track on driving test nerves. I'm not sure what did it in the end. I took it really hard after failing my third test a month ago (panicked and overcorrected my reverse park at test centre at the end, and failed) and wondered if I was ever going to do it.

A week ago, I got a last-minute cancellation and took my 4th test yesterday morning. I was still nervous as hell but tried to think positive and just focus on one instruction at a time. The examiner was quite nice but a little stiffer than the others I've had, didn't warm to him as much. When I came to a stop and he showed me the iPad that said 'Pass', I burst into tears. I couldn't believe it; I never thought I would do it. When my instructor came over, and the examiner then said I had a clean sheet, I was in shock. So I went from that horrendous first test, where everything went wrong, to a drive with zero faults. My instructor told me afterwards that I also had the strictest examiner in the test centre, and if he found no fault with the drive, that was seriously impressive.

I'm SO HAPPY! Have not stopped smiling since yesterday. And I just want to thank everyone who was so lovely on that first thread I posted and told me not to give up. I can finally get more experience in my own car and be free! If you're going through it, don't give up. Whether it's fourth or eighth or tenth test, the point is if you can drive safely and get through the nerves, you deserve that pass.

Ahhhh this is amazing news OP, I’m so happy for you - congratulations!!! I think some people don’t fully understand the nerves/mental block people can have with driving even if they are safe drivers! Just shows you had it in you all along and it was clearly just nerves before 😁

MindlessDaydream · 26/02/2025 12:20

Congrats OP! 🎉

Blackcountryexile · 26/02/2025 12:23

Thrilled to bits for you! I passed on my 4th test so I have an idea how much courage it takes to keep going!

Well done you! I didn't pass till my fifth go - the nerves are the worst! I passed in october and bought myself a car christmas tree decoration that year. It was over 10 years ago and I still grin to myself every time I hang it up : )

Goandygo · 26/02/2025 12:31

Well done @beezlebubnicky you did brilliantly ❤️

HellonHeels · 26/02/2025 12:32

Well done!!!

Enjoy the freedom of the roads Flowers

EBearhug · 26/02/2025 12:33

Congratulations! I too passed on my 4th attempt and burst into tears when I did.

beezlebubnicky · 26/02/2025 12:44

Aw thanks for the kind messages - and can see there are many other serial test-takers out there.

Is it weird that I'm too nervous to get in the car and drive by myself though? I know I'm allowed to, it just feels a bit wrong 😂 for some reason. Can't quite get over the block (I have sorted my insurance etc).

I'm going to try and do a short drive tomorrow, maybe just to to the shops, somewhere I've been before.

Also in the 4 times crew! High 5!

mrsjg · 26/02/2025 12:49

Congratulations and happy driving 🎉

MrsJHernandez · 26/02/2025 12:50

Congratulations!

Well done for your perseverance. It's a horrible feeling to fail.

I failed four theory tests. I also failed my first practical test and dramatically flopped face down onto the sofa in tears and declared I wouldn't be taking another! I did, and I passed 😂

user1471538283 · 26/02/2025 12:51

Congratulations! I knew you would do it!

The first drive on your own is nerve racking but like you say go somewhere you know, go when it's quieter and take your time!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/02/2025 13:14

Congratulations!

I took 5 - didn't even get in the car on the 4th!

Happy driving x

That’s brilliant news op, well done. Enjoy your new freedom, it’s so freeing and wonderful.

jjeoreo · 26/02/2025 13:19

Congrats!! Passed on 3rd time and cried happy tears as well

When people say "game changer" it rarely is, but passing your driving test as an adult is fantastic. Enjoy!

(And yes, I drove for about 45 seconds to a local church the day I after I passed and I was quaking the whole time but once I'd done that tiny journey I felt so much better)

EarlierDistraction · 26/02/2025 13:20

That's brilliant, well done! 3rd time for me, but it was a long time ago now. Also well done on managing to book so many in quick succession, I gather that's no mean feat too.

@EarlierDistraction I used the free Chrome extension someone on Reddit made, DVSA booking helper. It refreshes the website for you at intervals to help you grab a test. I did send the maker a donation as it was brilliant and worked so well!

For the last one though I just got it myself by refreshing on my phone and a cancellation popped up. It was fate!
