Pressing 55

This Is just a curiosity thing, if you call 999 and can’t talk they tell you to press 55 which lets the operator know you need help but can’t talk. How do they which numbers you have pressed?

The same way when you get a “press one for appointments. Press 2 for results. Press 3 for medical secretary” or whatever when you phone the Drs that it knows what you’ve pressed. It will be built into the system to recognise it.
