Too Good To Go App

Has anyone tried the Too Good To Go app?

For those that don't know, it's the app that saves food from going to waste. You can purchase a surprise bag of goodies from a supermarket, bakery or even restaurant at a highly reduced price. It saves these places throwing good food away at the end of the day.

I'm interested to know if anyone has had any great surprises, or alternatively disappointing ones.

Had them from afew different places
Never been disappointed

NormasArse · 25/02/2025 23:51

I tried three to compare.

Booths chilled food bag was ok- some of it was freezable. M&S was good- not as much as the others, but better stuff. Aldi was full of cakes, so most of it got thrown (what could I do with 16 cupcakes on the turn?). I did get a couple of decent things in there though.

I have had a Pret one which I took on a teatime picnic- that was good, but I don’t think I could’ve used it all myself.

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2025 23:54

Co op was the best one and Costa was decent

Enough4me · 25/02/2025 23:54

Tried a bakery one a few times and my DD tried Costa. It was fun for a change but ultimately I like to select things I feel like eating. One of my bakery bags had a beef and stilton pasty, great for my partner but I wouldn't have chosen it.
My DD's included a prawn sandwich (she hates prawns I pinched it!).
I'd recommend getting 2 bags and sharing with someone so you pick out the parts you'd like.

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2025 23:55

There is a Facebook group where people compare hauls 😀

RejoiceandSing · 25/02/2025 23:56

Best in a city in my experience, with lots of cafes and chains that participate. You can often get bags with a few meals in. So if you live more rurally and only have supermarket options, it's worth checking when you're staying in a city!

haveyoutriedit · 26/02/2025 00:04

My friend was telling me about this. She's just heard of it.

She said her son uses it and got a surprise bag from a supermarket (not sure which one). It contained five items ... which included four bags of salad at their best before date!

She hasn't used it yet but is going to give it a one off try just for fun.

Hit and miss, mostly hit. You get to know which places are good and which just fill the bags with crap without thought, like your experience with the salad.
My local Starbucks, Greggs and Cota are good, petrol station Waitrose less so.

CleverMintHedgehog · 26/02/2025 00:41

I’ve been using it mainly when I’m in the nearest city at the weekend as not much near me.

Favourites - Mai Sushi (in M&S) - last time even had salmon Sashimi! It’s a lunchtime and enough for dinner and lunch for myself.
Pret is usually good (had three salad pots last time for £4)
Cornish pasty at the station is good value.
There is a local bagel shop and for £3 I got 36 bagels (which they bake themselves), that filled up the freezer!
Cafe in Waterstones was also really good.
Millie’s cookies was great value (broken cookies but who cares!) and Kristy Kreme got a good one in the evenings (if you like them - I don’t).
Also a few local places where I had good things from.

Not really had a really bad one, though I don’t do supermarket / grocery bags which are probably more hit and miss.

It's entirely individual and varies from shop to shop ime. My worst so far was Morrisons because it was just a load of bread. Best here is a little Londis that puts together a wee mini-shop for you - so you get stuff you can make an evening meal from, plus extra fruit and veg, plus some kind of cake, plus packs of sausage rolls and the like that you can put in the freezer. Mostly the takeaways are generous but that doesn't save you money as such, only compared to if you were going to buy a takeaway anyway. But they are great for a treat.

Best thing to do is ask other people in your area where's good.

ARichtGoodDram · 26/02/2025 00:52

Can be hit or miss round here.

Costa is a waste of money. They also have a habit of cancelling minutes before you're due to arrive.

Greggs is always good. Waitrose is always excellent.

We mostly use it if we have a day out planned as the subway tend to do an early morning bag where you get 5/6 unfilled subs for £2. Usually has a few cookies as well. Makes the packed lunch a bit nicer than usual.

Interesting!!

I'll check out the Facebook group!

I live in a small market town so very few places offer it. I've not bought a bag from the local Co op because - according to the towns FB page - it's always full of manky lettuce. I've bought ones from the local independent bakery and they have always been great. Mostly cakes and pastries, which I don't eat, but we freeze them and DH has them at the weekends as a treat.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/02/2025 06:00

We have been using it for several years. At the start Morrisons was fantastic then went downhill a bit. Local garage can be good / crap.

Sushi from sainsburys usually a hit.

Had a great Greggs one the other week. 2 baguettes, a toastie, muffin and 4 yum yums for £2.95 I think it is. Sometimes I get one like that and my dd use for lunch for school the next day.

I have found they are good at refunding if any issues - one my sushi was really dry like the rice had been exposed to the air and I got a refund.

Plus another one where the value of the bag wasn't really what it should have been.

beguilingeyes · 26/02/2025 06:00

I'm a bit of an addict. I check local places when travelling around the country.
My local Sainsbury's has fantastic sushi. I got about £40 worth for a fiver on Monday.

terracelane23 · 26/02/2025 06:03

Yep, we've used it for a few years. We generally get bags from bakeries so it's often a mixture of cakes, pastries and sandwiches. Never tried the supermarkets though.

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/02/2025 06:05

I'm overweight as it is so why would I want to buy a load of random ultra processed food that I may not even like that needs to be eaten immediately? As far as I can see you mostly get bakery type stuff which I try my best to avoid.

So I'm not tempted. Good luck with your research OP.

The purpose of it is to sell food that is at or just before the BBE date, to the value of the stated bag (bags of salad unreduced can be £2 or more each). The shop has no obligation to give you a selection.

So definitely don’t order ones that are out of your way etc as you may waste your petrol money.

ETA I ended up leaving the FB group as there were a lot of posts complaining that they didn’t get a full meal or whatever, and that just is not the point of the app.

ThriveIn2025 · 26/02/2025 07:01

Supermarkets can be a risk. I stick to smaller shops like Greggs, Costa, Starbucks, when you know you’ll like anything they chuck in.

Agree it varies depending on what they have left but I’ve had 5 cakes from Starbucks before for £2.50. Worth it if you live close and can pop in before closing.

MiddleAgedDread · 26/02/2025 07:02

I did Morrisons and the local mini Waitrose (at a petrol station). Both weren’t great - the Morrisons one had a lot of stuff in it but neither had anything to make a full meal out of. I wouldn’t bother again.

ThymeScent · 26/02/2025 07:05

Tried it twice and both were cancelled by the vendor as they had run out of food Now just deleted the app.

I rest my case…😀

OP, some places are more predictable eg a local pizza place to me will promise you a “normal” fresh made pizza at 11pm - and they will just use the toppings they have left, say.

Harvester will give you chicken and a salad bar box at 9pm - because they have a good idea they will have those things left, but you may get a nice salad mix or you may get nothing but lettuce and tomatoes if that is what is left.

JollyHostess101 · 26/02/2025 07:28

Be used it for years but the standard has dropped where we are but it's worth a gamble and most times I get enough for lunches for a couple of days at work!

Morrisons used to be famed where we are and sold out immediately! Our local bakery I once got 10 Christmas donuts so no complaints there 🤣

Oh I’m sure there’s good stuff to be had, it’s just I’m not willing to get the car out and drive round town at 9-10pm at night!!
