And this as well!

BODMAS - division first so square root of 8, then square root of 2 and multiply the 2 answers together.

accentdusoleil · 25/02/2025 16:59

Is it 8x2 and then work out the square root of that

So 4

Wait for someone better to come along tho

Nn9011 · 25/02/2025 17:00

Second one he needs to work out what's missing from the boxes so he needs to work out the difference between the equations and that will tell him what should be filled in along top row and then how to answer the other missing ones

TeenToTwenties · 25/02/2025 17:00

Root 8 x root 2 is root 8x2 so root 16 ie 4.

My son is stuck on question 1…

Square route of 8 multiplied by the square route of 2.

What you need to do is multiply the two numbers together (without doing anything to them) then square route that, in this case it is 8x2 = 16, then square route of 16 is 4

TeenToTwenties · 25/02/2025 17:01

The table do any rows or columns that have 3 entries already. Keep going until all done.

TeenToTwenties · 25/02/2025 17:03

Root 32 is root 16x2 which is root 16 x root 2 which is 4root2.

The table do any rows or columns that have 3 entries already. Keep going until all done.

But how do you do them? How do you work it out?

(root x) times (root y) is always equal to root (x times y) for any x and y.

So (root 8) times (root 2) is equal to (root 16) which is 4.

Eyerollexpert · 25/02/2025 17:07

Square root of 8 is 2.82. Square root of 2 is 1.41. Multiply these two numbers give you the answer.
Square number is the number multiplied by itself.
Square root is a number when multiplied by itself gives the actual number

Talkingmouse · 25/02/2025 17:07

Top left box is 1/4

MoSalahsBeard · 25/02/2025 17:08

Talkingmouse · 25/02/2025 17:07

Top left box is 1/4

How do you know? If I can understand how to work this box thing out I can help him

OP posts:
TeenToTwenties · 25/02/2025 17:08

It's addition.
So 1/8 plus 1/3 is 11/24
Then 1/2-1/8 is 3/8 along the top row.

I was wrong you don't need 3 in a row/column only 2 out of the 3 anywhere.

Talkingmouse · 25/02/2025 17:09

1/4 add 1/2 equals 3/4

and do this to complete the gaps….

Eyerollexpert · 25/02/2025 17:10

The fractions need to have the same bottom numbers(denominator) before you can add them. So you have to make equivalent fractions. Eg. 1/2 = 2/4=3/6

LIZS · 25/02/2025 17:10

MoSalahsBeard · 25/02/2025 16:58

And this as well!

3/4-1/2 = 3/4-2/4= 1/4 in first top box
ie. Find common denominator to complete a sum with two of the three fractions you know.

Talkingmouse · 25/02/2025 17:10

So bottom left is: 9/20

1/4 add 1/5 which equals 5/20 add 4/20 which is 9/20

Talkingmouse · 25/02/2025 17:11

Top middle is 3/8….

1/8 add 3/8 equals 4/8 which equals 1/2

Talkingmouse · 25/02/2025 17:12

And so on….good luck

Eyerollexpert · 25/02/2025 17:12

MoSalahsBeard · 25/02/2025 17:08

How do you know? If I can understand how to work this box thing out I can help him

Where one fraction from the top row, meets a fraction from the side the box is empty as they need adding together.

Eyerollexpert · 25/02/2025 17:15

How old is your so?"Pass functional skills" is a free basic website I use to teach it has videos, questions and answers and shows how to work out if you get a question wrong.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/02/2025 17:16

Sq root of 8 mult by sq root of 2 is 4
Sq root of 8 is 2.82

TeenToTwenties · 25/02/2025 17:18

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/02/2025 17:16

You don't need to know root 8.

OP. If your DC is doing surds, presumably they know how to add and subtract fractions.

BashfulClam · 25/02/2025 17:18

I think on the squares the top one you need to know what value makes 5/6 so 1/2+3/4 =4/6 so it would be 1/6?

i was shite at maths though.
