Low ferritin?

Fairyvocals · 24/02/2025 19:37

I’ve just had some routine blood tests - all marked as normal by the lab, but I noticed that my ferritin had dropped sharply, to 19 ug/L from 50 when I was tested about 18 months ago.

This seems to be at the very bottom of the NHS’ normal range. But is this something to ask the GP about? The weird thing is that I started taking Feraglobin a few months ago, so you’d think it would have risen!

I have no idea whether this is something to pursue or just normal. I’m 54, btw, and in the throes of perimenopause, so everything feels a bit out of whack at the moment.

My ferritin has just come back as 20 on a blood test done by rheumatology who told me verbally and on a letter to contact GP for iron replacement as it’s low. GP told me to just buy iron and try and eat more!

I would say if you are taking iron and it’s still dropped it’s worth discussing with the GP so they can look in to why this may be just in case of any sinister reason.

I'm the same. got blood tests back today and ferritin was 17. Maybe that's why I'm absolutely knackered and run down:-) My consultant (endochronologist) is going to ring me about it so I'll let you know what he says.

Eat grass-fed red meat with some steamed kale and olive oil. Regularly.

sod's law I try and offer help on a thread feeling a bit smug not to suffer the same problem and wham! got a blood test result saying low ferritin!🙄

WeeklyNameChangeTime · 26/02/2025 21:23

Mine was 8. 8! I would sleep entire weeks away, it was awful. As soon as I got one above the normal range the GP cut off my iron tablets. I’ve bought them privately now.

Lots can cause it, even having thrush!

I feel as though I now know every iron rich food there is and I’m trying to only reach for iron rich foods alongside something with vitamin c. So if I’m having a salad I add lemon juice or strawberries (I like them in salads) etc.

Good luck!

ParmaVioletts · 26/02/2025 22:36

Can you buy iron tablets

Fairyvocals · 27/02/2025 11:43

Oh no, @wavingfuriously ! Hope
orange juice and green veg do the trick 😁.
@WeeklyNameChangeTime I had no idea about thrush - I did have it recently, thanks to being on antibiotics. Mad!
