I want to start doing my elderly Mum's tax return for her, online. She has always done it by paper before. I regularly log in online to my own government gateway etc. I always use the same Macbook. It remembers my passwords etc. How can I best go about creating an account for her but yet not saving her passwords so they get mixed up with mine? Would the problem be solved if I log out of my mac and create a guest account (still on my mac) and make the account from there?
I'd be very grateful if someone has a good idea of how to do this. I guess I could open her account in private browsing and manually input her password every time, but it seems an annoying way...

Could you use a different browser for each? Yours in safari and your mum’s in chrome?

BillieJ · 24/02/2025 18:32

Yes, different browsers - I have different accounts for various websites. Personal on Vivaldi, family on Safari and work on Edge. They all remember the right me!

Was going to suggest the same. It will be Chrime for ever more.

WeirdSponge · 24/02/2025 18:32

You can also set up
diffetent chrome accounts

anyuary · 24/02/2025 18:34

oh thanks, this is brilliant, hadn't thought of that! I will try this.

I fear Safari's days are numbered as i keep getting warnings that Safari isn't supported etc etc, but for now, that would be excellent. The only alternative is Edge on my work laptop..

You don't need to faff around with browsers the gateway remembers the password specific to the user number.

At least it does on PCs, you can log into as many as you want and remember the password for each one

Squiggles23 · 24/02/2025 18:38

Ive had more than one government gateway account in the past (for businesses as well as personal). My computer remembers the different account number options and passwords. I didn’t set anything up for it to remember. The only issue is knowing which number is which but you can just log out and try a different one if you pick the wrong one!

anyuary · 24/02/2025 18:39

thanks guys! I will give it a try.

I did accounts for HMRC for myself and my husband on my iPad. When logging into GOV website my iPad gave 2 user ID’s and when I selected one it used the correct password.

purplecorkheart · 24/02/2025 19:00

incognito in chrome or whatever you use might work.

tentaclez · 24/02/2025 19:55

@anyuary you don't need to use a different account, your mum just needs to nominate you as her intermediary: https://www.gov.uk/appoint-tax-agent

thanks, these replies are really helpful. I will look into it.

As @Squiggles23 has said. I use a variety of Govt Gateway logins for my work using same hardware and software - just select ID (it will remember them if "remember me" box is ticked) and key in password. No need for separate machines or browsers.

I use the HMRC app on my phone, I log in with a 6 digit app pin.
That said, I only have to complete a small section (for high income child benefit), I'm not doing a full return.
