I ended up with a week in Miami after a conference - stayed on South Beach and had an absolutely brilliant time. Loved the laid back vibe in the day - had a laugh at some of the shenanigans at night - ate some amazing food.

Lanzarote

Haven - the chain of static caravan sites. We went because a Sun newspaper voucher break was all we could afford. We went back because we really enjoyed it and they have great locations :)

Tobago - we got a last minute there in 1998 or 1999, cannot remember which.
Very pleasant hotel (3*) that had everything. Not at all touristy, good walks, ended up one morning going to a local cafe and having a really interesting chat with the owner.
Only 4 of us on that particular last minute, so had pretty exclusive trips - round the island, over to Little Tobago, which is a bird sanctuary, cruising down the coast to Nylon Pool on a catamaran. Excellent rum punch.
Even enjoyed the hotel's evening entertainment - band (our tour guide John was in it) and limbo dancing.
The Caribbean is my favourite sea to swim in.
We also did a day trip over to Trinidad and a boat trip through the mangrove swamps. thoroughly magical.

Madeira... I had imagined it was an OAP / cruise ship destination but found interesting/ challenging hikes and rugged coastline, opportunities to swim, reasonable prices and decent food/ bars. Would happily return!

New York. I have been 4 times and I absolutely love it. I'm 65 at the end of this year and I'm debating whether I can justify (financially and politically) going back for one more time next year.

Murtus · 10/07/2025 17:58

Gran Canaria. The best Canary Island.

notnorman · 10/07/2025 18:00

Benidorm!

Totally agree

Dubai.

Bamboozles · 10/07/2025 18:03

Ireland, definitely 😃

JDM625 · 10/07/2025 18:03

Malaga. The 'city' itself, not the coastal resorts.

Me too! I've been in spring a couple of times (lovely) and summer (never again!) but I love the place and could happily visit at least annually.

I also love Florence with a passion (avoid Easter week and summer!).

Me too. It's a brilliant city. Full of history and culture and nice things to look at and great food. I think it's pretty under-rated probably because of its proximity to those coastal resorts.

Sayshesheshe · 10/07/2025 18:12

Mallorca. Massively surprised me (we didn’t go anywhere near a resort!)

Snoodley · 10/07/2025 18:45

Center Parcs 😬

Lanzarote

Came on hear to say exactly the same thing!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 10/07/2025 18:46

Madeira, Skiathos, Seville

Onthewaytothemountains · 10/07/2025 18:47

Las Vegas, expecting it to be really seedy but it was all high end, really professional.

Benidorm!

Going this year for the first time, so here’s hoping I feel the same! Have stayed in the general area before (Alicante etc), but never Benidorm.

FluffPiece · 10/07/2025 18:49

Disney. Went because DS is a superfan, thought I’d hate it for being too commercial and forced happy. Had an amazing time and have been back many times since!

Crunchymum · 10/07/2025 18:54

Las Vegas and Lanzarote were both going to be my answers.

Playa Blanca was lovely. Such a chilled vibe and not what I expected at all.

Vegas was fab. We didn't gamble at all but went to loads of amazing restaurants, saw shows and gigs, went to Hoover Dam and The Grand Canyon (in a helicopter!). We explored all the big hotels, some of them were daytrips in themselves - it really does need to be seen to be believed. We had an absolute ball and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

EmotionalSupportBlanket · 11/07/2025 06:22

Luxembourg City. I went with practically no expectations and ended up really enjoying it. It was almost 20 years ago though, so it might have changed since then!

I went last year on a day trip from Benalmadena, and want to go back again to explore some more.

sciaticafanatica · 11/07/2025 06:27

Bilbao. Fabulous city, lots to do, great people, food & location. Easy enough to go to San Sebastián from there as well.
we loved it

Fethiye, Turkey and that coastline in general, amazing AI options, gorgeous, gorgeous water and sea views and Fethiye was very cool. Third visit booked for October!
