How do you label stuff for the freezer?

If you batch cook and freeze the extra portions, what do you use to label them?

I'm fed up of eating freezer surprise for dinner!

Sharpie

Janek · 24/02/2025 06:56

Yep, store in old curry containers for easy stacking, label with a Sharpie.

I normally freeze things in glass jars/boxes (better for you than freezing in plastic). I write the label/date on masking tape with a sharpie and stick it on the lid. Easy to remove once you get it out of the freezer.

Sharpie. By the time there are several crossed out old labels, the tub is past it anyway.

JackJarvisEsq · 24/02/2025 06:59

Label maker

AlteredStater · 24/02/2025 06:59

I used a label printer that has nice sticky labels. Then stick them on the containers I use, this one:

Sharpie - with what it is, date (I use a calorie counting app so the date helps match the meal to the correct info) and how many portions

BigDahliaFan · 24/02/2025 07:07

I bought some freezer labels from Lakeland and use a sharpie. Too many freezer surprises before that.

TheElvesLongSleeves · 24/02/2025 07:08

Masking tape and pen. Easy peasy

HundredPercentUnsure · 24/02/2025 07:09

On masking tape, in biro or Sharpie, stuck on the lid. Labelled with what it is, portion size/number of servings, and the date.

Diningtableornot · 24/02/2025 07:12

In my mind.
I think: I’ll definitely remember what this is.
And a month later, Whats this?

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 24/02/2025 07:13

Takeaway carton and lid, write with a sharpie ‘chicken korma for 3, February 2025’. I do have plastic bags that stand up for soup though, due to the volume.

AmytheDancingBrick · 24/02/2025 07:14

My freezer is a collection of surprises!

MegTheForgetfulCat · 24/02/2025 07:15

Sticky label and pen, with date and other details added (eg if extra ingredient needed before serving). I have a notebook that I use for meal planning each week. In the front I make a list of planned meals for the week and in the back I have a list of freezer meals, divided into sections of how many portions each tub contains. That way it is easy to pick out a freezer meal to allocate on days where we need it. It's a bit geeky but means the stuff in the freezer gets used and replenished often rather than a lovely curry found 5 years later!

LostMyLanyard · 24/02/2025 07:17

I don't 🤣 and then play that fun game, "pot luck freezer tea" on a regular basis 💪👌🏻 Makes life interesting 🤣🤣

CatsorDogsrule · 24/02/2025 07:17

Sharpie and masking tape here too.

bizzey · 24/02/2025 07:19

I love my freezer roulette game !!

Dancetildawn · 24/02/2025 07:21

Sharpie here too-generally wipes off easily afterwards

I indicate portion size & if anything else needs adding-eg 'chicken curry 2xsm add sides'

I assumed a Sharpie would be permanent so haven't used one and sticky labels always seem to fall off. Thanks!

It's all fun and games until what you thought was going to be a casserole turns out to be stewed fruit, then crumble for supper it is! Grin

Probably better that way round than the opposite...
