What age would you say boys reach their final height?

Just wondering as ds is 15 and seems to not be growing for last 6 months. Did your ds grow any more after this age?

Just remember from school I remember a lot of boys coming back much taller between 5th and 6th year so about 16-17 i'd say most were close to fully grown.

Our eldest grandson at 20 is still growing. He's at the moment 5ft 11.
At Christmas he was 5ft 10.
Youngest grandson (different parents) at 15 is 6ft 2.
Yet our granddaughters 16, 17 and 18 seem to have stopped.

All children are different and grow at down stages.

DS one is 19 and 6ft, same as dad, hes just started filling out. DS two who's just turned 16 Is 6ft 4ins and doesn't seem to be stopping. My 2 dd are also tall. My ex stopped growing by 18 but my db both grew until their early 20's.

All my boys had a growth spurt around 20 after a couple of years without much change. With the first one, it was quite a shock - I wasn’t expecting him to grow any more, and he went from 5’ 10” to 6’ 2” in a few months.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/02/2025 09:33

Does anyone else recall the huge volumes of food required during the mega growth spurts. My food shopping seemed to become industrial during that period.

Xiaoxiong · 24/02/2025 09:35

I swear DH grew a few more inches between when I met him age 20 and then a few years later.

BatchCookBabe · 24/02/2025 09:45

17-18.

Stillplodding · 24/02/2025 09:52

DS1 was 6’2 at 14. He’s 6’5 at 21 and hasn’t really grown upwards since about 18-19. I’m almost certain he stopped growing as his food intake dropped considerably in the past year or so. He is a natural bean pole shape (was less than 10.5stone at 6’2), but he started to fill out at about 18- his chest broadened and he finally started to be less twig like but he’s always going to retain his dad’s figure. It was/is a nightmare finding him trousers as he’s out of proportion and his height is in his legs. At school I had to buy him asos men’s suit trousers in a 30w, 38l.

Ds2 is 15 and a touch under 6’2. I don’t think he’ll be as tall as his brother. He’s a more muscular build and in proportion. At the moment he can usually wear a normal longer length trouser from regular ranges.

Their dad is tall and thin naturally. I’m very average at 5’4 (and sadly not a naturally thin type! 😩). I was comparatively tall until about 12… and then I stopped and everyone overtook me! The men in my family tend to be either on the short side at 5’7/5’8… or 6’2 plus.

It can be up to 21 for boys, but most stop growing around 17-18.
Your DS is probably due for a growth spurt, but if you're worried keep a record of his height and talk to your GP if you're concerned. 15 is quite young for a boy to stop growing so if you really think he has it should be checked out just in case.

CatherinedeBourgh · 24/02/2025 10:06

A paed told me that they grow on average 2x 10cm growth spurts and then about 2-3 cm residual.

So boys who have their growth spurts early (and when they are shorter) will often stop earlier and can end up shorter than those who start later when they have already grown a bit more.

Ds1 exactly fit this pattern, he had his first growth spurt at 13, his second at 15 and was all done growing by 16.

SunshineInMySprocket · 24/02/2025 10:09

We have a super tall son; I think he’s at his full height now at 21. But there was a stage where I thought our children would be the same height. I seem to remember it being Year 10/11 when he started shooting up.

Sunat45degrees · 24/02/2025 10:10

Yup, it varies quite a lot. I have a good friend who was always tall but his brother was short. Then, when his brother turned 18 he went travelling for a year and came back taller than my friend! Grin

It is quite common to grow quite a bit between 12-14. DS plays basketball and the coaches told me that the jump from u12 to u14 is quite challenging for team selection because the boys can change such a lot during that time. But it's also not unusual for growth to happen later.

If you are very concerned, you can talk to your doctor - are other signs of puberty on track?

TabbyBeast · 24/02/2025 10:12

My DS is 17 and a shade under 6ft. He's probably been this height for a couple of years.

His shoe size hasn't grown in 3 years so I'm assuming that might be it?

Dad isn't particularly tall, I'm over average for a woman but not particularly tall. Men on my mum's side are all 6ft - 6ft 6in. DS was premature so that might be a factor too.

alpenguin · 24/02/2025 10:13

myself and my siblings (m) all grew a few inches after 18. I was 21. I don’t know if that’s a weird my family thing or normal.

Karatema · 24/02/2025 15:14

My DS1 was the shortest amongst his friend group, at 15 (just about 5ft5).
At 22, he was the tallest (6ft2).
