What age would you say boys reach their final height?

Just wondering as ds is 15 and seems to not be growing for last 6 months. Did your ds grow any more after this age?

I think the answer is, it just depends.
My son( now early 30s) was always on the 50th centile for height, reached 5'7" by 15, but stopped then and never grew any taller. His father was 5'10, I'm 5'5 and his sister is 5'6, so all quite average, but he just ended up shorter. His male cousins vary from 5'10 to 6'5.
It's never bothered him, he keeps fit, goes to the gym, he was never without a girlfriend from 15 and his wife is exactly the same height as him, so if she wears heels is taller. It's never impeded him in any way, socially, career wise or in relationships.

Luddite26 · 24/02/2025 04:38

I remember my brother at 18/19/20 still growing every time I saw him he seemed to be taller. He's 6' 4" . Don't worry if he's 15 there is plenty of time.

WarmHairdryer · 24/02/2025 07:15

Between 18-20 I'd say.

Ds1 stopped growing at around 17 and is 6ft2, Ds2 is still growing at 15, seems to grow out of trousers fast!

boysmuminherts · 24/02/2025 07:19

My 18yo 6ft 1/2ish hasn't grown for a couple of years, since before GCSEs. My 14yo had a massive growth spurt over the past year (now 6ft) but hopefully has more growing to do. (Edited to include heights)

RosesAndHellebores · 24/02/2025 07:22

DS had a huge spurt at about 14 - I think he grew about 9 inches in 12 months. Then all the shorties over took him in the fifths. Another in lower sixth when his suit trousers were too short after a term, and I'm pretty sure he grew another inch at about 21!

TriangleLight · 24/02/2025 07:30

@SalfordQuays i think that’s rubbish about a stealth boast, I came on this thread as I worry about ds growing more as he’s 16 and over 6’5 and I’m really hoping he’s stopped!

HelenCurlyBrown · 24/02/2025 07:38

My 22 year old is still growing. His bone plates have yet to fuse, so I’m not sure how much longer it will go on.

With my other son, he was by far the shortest in years 7,8 and 9, but ended up one of the the tallest by years 12 and 13. The boys that grew early seemed to stop growing early too.

Fizbosshoes · 24/02/2025 07:47

DS is 15, he has had a massive growth spurt around 13 or 14 and grew about 8 inches, and 5 shoe sizes, in 18 months....but I'm hoping he'll grow a bit more slowly as he's still well below average height.

SalfordQuays · 24/02/2025 00:01

@YerAWizardHarry stealth boast. As a parent of a short boy, I’ve noticed how much people love to go on and on, with fake eye rolls, at how tall their boys are.

You're looking out for it and choosing to be offended. 🤷‍♀️

Frowningprovidence · 24/02/2025 07:54

Ds is 17 and he has stopped growing. He has an orthapeadics consultant who could see on his x rays something on the endplates. He grew maybe an inch the previous year.

Nottodaty · 24/02/2025 07:55

My daughters friendship group the boys all seemed to finally stop growing at 21!

Some had reached 6ft at 18 then grew another 3inches! One has grown little since he was 16 (maybe an inch or 2!) Definitely the changes mostly
seemed to happen from 18-21. Only one who was the tallest at 14/15 he was already 6.2 and hasn’t really grown much more!

Both my girls stopped at 13…5.4.

UselessMumAlert · 24/02/2025 08:24

DS is also 15 And had a massive growth spurt from 14-15. He went from being half a head shorter than DH to being significantly taller! I'm hoping that's about it as I feel so short bext to him. I had to replace his shoes this year rather than buy the next size up, which I hope is a sign his feet won't grow any more!

lateSeptember1964 · 24/02/2025 08:30

All four of my boys continued to grow until early 20’s. Took me by surprise the first couple of times as I thought they would stop late teens.

gegs73 · 24/02/2025 08:39

DS1 stopped just before he was 20. His voice didn’t break properly he was 16 though so he was really late to get going. Went from about 5’8 to 6’3 and I think he’s done.

DS2 is nearly 18 and I think he’s about done too, his voice went went he was about 14, he’s always been really tall though so went from about 6 to 6’8.

With my (not very) scientific reasoning from my experience, it seems when their voice breaks they grow about another 6 inches or so.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/02/2025 08:42

DM swears that DB1 was still growing at 20. DS seems to be slowing up in height at 16.

IfYouLook · 24/02/2025 08:46

My ds is 19 and still growing. He’s desperately hoping to tip over the 6ft mark by the time he is done - so he’s hoping he’s one of the still going up to 21 brigade. He was pretty small in early teens and ate eff all too. His Dad is “only” 5ft 10 but he’s got some taller uncles. Now he just seems to eat continuously and really healthy stuff too. He’s away for a few months in the US so I imagine I’ll see a difference when he comes back.

CeeJay81 · 24/02/2025 08:48

DS grew a lot between 13 and 15. Now nearly 16, he seems to have stopped. He may grow a little more but he's already slightly above what I expected him to be.

I think this thread shows that they can stop growing anytime from 15 to 21. So there is no need to worry just yet.

Didntask · 24/02/2025 08:49

My brother grew approx 6 inches in 18mo between 16yo and 18yo. Topped out at 6'5.

SnoopysHoose · 24/02/2025 08:49

My DS25, has been 6'4 since he was 16, was always tall for his age but shot up at 15/16.

villainandvixen · 24/02/2025 08:50

Dennis Rodman famously had his at 19/20. Grew about 10 inches. Was never tall enough to play high school basketball.

bloodredfeaturewall · 24/02/2025 08:52

2 of them here.

both grew steadily but slowly from about 12 and then had a massive spurt around 14-15.
then kept growing steadily, the 18yo seems to have slowed right down now.
feet stopped growing around age 16 (thank god!)

other boys I know seem to follow a similar pattern but with the major growth spurt anytime between 12 and 16.

rustlerwaiter · 24/02/2025 08:58

I'm 6'1 and was always average height at school, I think it was after I left, probably 16-18, that I grew a little bit more.

Zeroperspective · 24/02/2025 09:00

There was a boy I went to school with, left school at 16 and he was around 5ft 6in saw him a few years later aged 20/21 and he was 6ft 2in! No idea when he got his growth spurt but I'd say at 15 there's a chance your DC could still grow a bit more

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 24/02/2025 09:01

Not sure DS has been told he will attend scoliosis clinic until 21 as he will be finished growing by then. He's almost 18 and only 5ft 4.
