What age would you say boys reach their final height?

Just wondering as ds is 15 and seems to not be growing for last 6 months. Did your ds grow any more after this age?

I don't have a son but I know my mother in law took my husband to the doctor when he was 16 because she was so worried about his (lack of) height.

By the time he was 18 he was 6'3".

Fordian · 23/02/2025 23:21

My youngest did his spurt at 18-19

avignon1234 · 23/02/2025 23:30

It is hard for me to remember the exact ages, and the exact heights, but I've got two boys, and one was the smallest in the class (his sister who was a year younger was taller, but still not "tall", the other somewhere in the middle. They absolutely shot up from 16-19, so much so it was ridiculous. Both over 6ft now, the youngest has ended up thin and tall at 19 as a result. They are both about 6ft 2 or 3, and I don't think the 19 year old has finished yet. Please don't worry, you will be buying new trousers every couple of months soon. xx

Much later than girls. Late teens probably and early 20s to fill out.

Pyjamatimenow · 23/02/2025 23:33

They can definitely grow beyond that age. My stepson is a lot taller now at 22 than he was on our wedding photos at 16

Hollyhedge · 23/02/2025 23:34

My DC started growing late and is continuing to as he approaches his 16th birthday. One of my brothers had a spurt around 20. Anything is possible it seems. I was so worried until DC was 14.5 and started growing!

DelphiniumBlue · 23/02/2025 23:35

I was told by the orthopaedic surgeon looking after my son that boys can continue to grow till about 21.
My experience is that they have their major growth spurt often around 14+ but then grow another inch or so after that over the next 4 or 5 years.

ShamrockShenanigans · 23/02/2025 23:36

I have 3 adult sons and they all reached theirs between 20 and 21.

This thread scares me with a 5ft8 just turned 12 year old 😬

Don’t be scared! They all have their spurt at different times. My DS was probably around the height of yours at 12 and he’s now 22 and 6ft1, a perfectly ok height!

OP my friend took his son to the doctor when he was 16 as he was concerned about his lack of height, and he was just a late developer. He’s over 6ft now too.

@YerAWizardHarry stealth boast. As a parent of a short boy, I’ve noticed how much people love to go on and on, with fake eye rolls, at how tall their boys are.

Beehoon · 24/02/2025 00:04

Endocrinologist told us boys … about age 18 for “late bloomers” … 1-2 years after growth spurt.

Boys with early growth spurt, final height will be earlier.

It’s not all fun and games- my son has outgrown his uniform that was bought in August and no longer fits in “children’s” uniforms (eg age 17-18 from Next/Asda etc) and he’s only in his first year of High School. He also grows a shoe size roughly every 6 months and hasn’t worn children’s sized shoes since he was around 9 years old so his shoes/clothes cost an absolute fortune.

we also had to specially order his school jumpers in his last two years of primary school as the biggest size they went up to from the supplier was 11-12.

SleepPrettyDarling · 24/02/2025 00:05

Any age between 14 and 19 in my experience

Also not to mention the sheer amount of food he consumes. My comment about being scared was 100% genuine and certainly not a stealth boast.

BCSurvivor · 24/02/2025 00:08

My son, now 32, didn't really have a proper growth spurt until he was 20/21.

bruffin · 24/02/2025 00:17

DS was 6ft at 13 but never grew any taller .

My dad was 5'9" by 12 years old and never grew any taller. He went from being the tallest in his class to one of the shorter ones.

colinthedogfromaccounts · 24/02/2025 00:46

DS1 stopped growing at 14.
DS2 stopped growing at 16.

Some grow early, some late. It's not possible to pinpoint it. Unless there is a real concern for precocious or delayed puberty - it's probably best not to think about it too much.

user1492757084 · 24/02/2025 00:50

About 21 - 25 years.
Most growth spurt about 16 - 19 years.

PoopingAllTheWay2 · 24/02/2025 00:58

About 20/21

BeaAndBen · 24/02/2025 01:34

Nephew - 15
DS1 - 18
DS2 - 20

Some are tall as young lads but stop growing early, some are short but have a late growth spurt - it’s genetics.

thaegumathteth · 24/02/2025 01:36

My son is 18 and I'd say he's grown another 2 inches or so in the last 3 months. He's approx 6ft1.

Goldenbear · 24/02/2025 02:02

An obvious indicator is surely the height of he parents or maybe grandparents? My eldest is 18 and still growing he's about 6ft, my husband doesn't have a particular tall family on either side, one side Irish, I have Danish family and although I'm only slightly above average I think DS takes after my side of the family as the men are tall.

GildedRage · 24/02/2025 02:11

dh and youngest son both had their final spurt between 20 and 21.
youngest ds was the shortest in his group for quite some time (slow to get his secondary and wisdom teeth as well). was nearing 6 ft by 18 and 6'2" final height by 21. no short men in the family and they all were late bloomers.
