Hip Replacement Timescales

I have been on the waiting list for a double hip replacement since August last year and have my pre-assessment next week. How long after the pre-assessment has anyone had to wait for the actual op, as I have been told it could still be 6 months away?

The people I know have waited over a year. Unfortunately the pre op means nothing, I had 3 of them before my actual operation ( not a hip replacement) I really hope yours is sooner, it'll depend where you are in the country I imagine

Partner just had the replacement at the end of last month. His pre-op was at the end of December and they said the timescales for him, were about 5 months.

He called a few days later and asked to be put on a cancellation lists. So last month, at 9.30am on Wednesday they called and asked whether he could go in the afternoon. Luckily, he had not eaten yet so was told not to eat and came home to prepare. It was confirmed at 1.30 and he needed to be there an hour later. I was also able to be at home whilst he recovered.

Would being a cancellation list, an option?

Here in the South, there is an option to choose surgery at a local a private hospital which has an agreement with the NHS.
It may be worth asking if your local health authority has such a scheme.
The wait is then about 7 weeks.

I agree with this. My nan had two pre ops by the time she actually got it done.

My pre-op for a single hip replacement was two weeks to the day of my actual operation.

It has been life-changing, I could not recommend it highly enough.

Usually the surgery will be within 12 weeks of the pre assessment. Some sites will be running 3 - 4 weeks between poa and surgery. My MIL is awaiting a hip revision, she has her pre assessment 20 days before her surgery.

I had mine done at Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic Hospital 6 weeks after my preop, just before Christmas.

Thanks for all responses.
Cancellation list would not work for me if I was called in say the next day, due to sorting out home and work logistics. And mentalling myself too...

Oh and I live alone too which is an additional complication!

You wouldn't be a candidate for a short notice cancellation as would need to use the Mrsa decolonisation wash for 5 days pre op so would expect at least a weeks notice for your TCI (to come in) date. Sometimes people have multiple pre assessments as they are generally valid for only 12 weeks and something happens to change the list order, such as consultant on study leave or prioritisation of certain cases. Are you getting both sides done at once?

Sunnydays1974 · 23/02/2025 22:00

That's useful info thanks. I'm getting both done.
