Weird coincidence - tell me yours

The weirdest thing happened to me today. I was waiting at an international airport terminal for a family member and getting coffee when I thought I spotted a famous sports player next to me. I spent a few mins trying to surreptitiously look sideways and eventually he got up and I realised it wasn’t him.

I then went to the arrivals gate to wait for family member. About 15 mins later - I kid you not - the actual real life famous sports person exited the arrivals gate and walked past me. It was 100% not the same man from earlier.

Am I insane - or is that an insane coincidence?! I’m sure you'll all think I’m crackers but I’m always looking for a meaning or sign from the universe too 🤣

Scrabble with Mum and brother, Mum to go first. "Go on," I said, "put a 7 letter word down...like IGUANAS." She had the letters.

True story from many years ago..
One particular year in my 20s, i was backpacking around the Middle East and got detained and interrogated at a particular airport there. I was detained straight off my flight at passport control, they were suspicious about some other Middle Eastern travel in my passport stamps and weren't happy that I refused to share email passwords and bank details etc. Nothing to hide, but I just would rather be turned away than be violated like that. The "chief" interrogator was a very distinctive looking man who spent approx 6 hours quizzing me on every aspect of my life from my ancestry to my religious beliefs, to politics, to finances, you name it. Even though it was nearly 20 years ago, I still remember his face, it's the sort you never forget.
This happened around the February time and then, low and behold, who did I come face to face with whilst walking around a famous London park 6 months later with my boyfriend (who was from the same country as where the interrogation happened). Yeah, it was him! Absolutely no doubt about it. We locked eyes and he appeared to be trying to un-nerve me as he did back in the "airport interrogation".
2 weeks after the "park" experience, my boyfriend was in a departure lounge at Heathrow to catch a flight home when he was approached by a female asking to "borrow his laptop". Being smart, he refused and said no chance. She starting asking for his contact details, again he refused. All a coincidence? I'm not so sure..

When I was 21 I had a big party in a social club owned by a local company. We paid the deposit and I started to send out invitations. I'd been friendly with a girl, Pauline, at school, not best friends, but we sat together in some subjects. We lost touch after school but I thought I'd like to invite her. Her parents had moved and it took me ages to track them down. I got a phone call from a mutual friend who'd found out the address. Next morning the post came and a letter from the company with the receipt for the deposit, signed by Pauline.
20 years later we moved house and guess who our new neighbour was? Yes, Pauline again!

Was going to Cuba the other year from Manchester. Sat in the departure lounge i noticed a friend from school was also going to Cuba but from a different airport. Didn't think anything else of it.

About 4 days later we were on a bus and this friend and partner get on! Turns out we had done the exact same holiday albeit different hotels (3 days in the capital Havana then getting the bus for a week by the beach in Varadero).

Was very nice to see them and I think the bus journey was about 4 hours long so was good to have a catch up. Turned out this guys partner who I had never met before worked for the same company as me as well, albeit different department and office

Mum and dad live in a small village in the north west.

A few years ago they went on holiday to Martha's Vineyard in the US and stayed in a remote BnB. It had three rooms and of the two other couples staying one was from their village and the other was from somewhere else in the north west.

Dad said the female half of the other couple from their village was NOT pleased to be spending her holiday near other English people 😂

...

Also, my uncle was once on holiday in a random bar in New York and ended up sitting next to one of his second cousins from Ireland. They'd not met as adults and only realised their connection when the death of a mutual relative was mentioned.

I once queued up for a small ferry boat that runs between 2 little Cornish places. There were 3 people I used to work with in the queue.

You have the company of a guardian Angel, they tell you what's hoing to happen. Years ago I bought a DVD of a feature film in a shop. I took it home and coukdnt wait to watch it. As In placed it in the player, I noticed that the TV CHANNEL was just sbout to show the same film so the DVD was playing in -tandem about One second behind.

Friend I knew from school went to Canada for a year. Unknown to me, another friend of mine from university also went travelling.

They realised they were 2 English people so said hello to each other. The first man asked the other which university he had been to. The second said the name of my university. First man said, "do you happen to know Schrödinger'sTwat2?"

Man 2 had done the same degree as me, same year, only 25 people on the course and had chatted to me a lot over 3 years!

They were from hundreds of miles apart in the UK.

I have a few funny coincidences, but a couple that spring to mind...

About 20+ years ago, my brother and my best friend from uni bumped into each other in some random little pub in the Australian outback. They had never met before but she recognised him from a photo I had of him in my room and he recognised her from photos of when we graduated together! They had a drink together and both told me about it afterwards!

This one is slightly difficult to explain but still blows my mind a bit...back in the 80s and 90s, my DH's godparents used to host small dinner parties every now and then. My now in-laws used to go and would always end up chatting to one particular couple who they didn't know at all aside from these evenings but they got on well. They would chat about their kids etc, in particular my PIL's oldest son and the other couple's youngest daughter as they were roughy the same age. Anyway, 20 years later - and completely coincidentally (there was no meeting each other though this very vague link and PIL's son and the other couple's daughter never met) - I married the son and my brother married the daughter!!

When I was around 6 my mum who was a single parent and very skint had taken us to see a free pantomime. It was provided by a charity who had arranged travel there and had given some families £5 to make our own way home. As we were waiting for the taxi my mum dropped some stuff and while trying to catch it all dropped the £5 and it blew away. She couldn't chase after it across a busy road and 3 kids with her. However at that moment a £20 note landed at my little brothers shoe. My mums quite superstitious and said "That's yer grandma looking after us it is!" 😄

beachcitygirl · 24/02/2025 02:35

I once walked into a bar in Lilongwe, Malawi to find the barman was someone I went to primary school with in Ireland
Bizarre

beachcitygirl · 24/02/2025 02:37

Oh and my pal bought a new house - the wife showed them round - on completion she found out the husband was her ex fiancee

National Insurance numbers are completely randomly assigned. Mine and my brothers are exactly the same apart from the last letter.

I'm sure siblings numbers are like this?!

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 24/02/2025 02:57

I live in a small village in NI less than 500 people. Went to a concert in Dublin with 82,000 odd others ... only to end up sitting beside the guy whose back garden runs into mine. Neither knew each other were attending the concert.

Minimili · 24/02/2025 03:52

I have loads of these, some are just random but some are pretty weird…

Me and my sister were walking down the street in our home town, we were talking about how great Roy Walker had been on an episode of come dine with me and how he was “an absolute fucking legend”
We heard a man laugh and say “thank you ladies!” It was Roy Walker!

I had a favourite book as a child that I had got from my school library and never returned, it had the school name inside and I wrote my own name in when I was about 10.
Years later I left it at my ex boyfriend’s when I moved out of the house with a few other books and never asked for it back.
I decided to buy the same book off eBay about 10 years later to read for the nostalgia, when the book arrived it was the same one with my name and school inside. I’m guessing my ex boyfriend or his new girlfriend sold it or gave it away and that’s how it ended up on eBay.

I bought a bracelet last year with some money a friend sent me for my birthday whilst we were on holiday on one of the Canary Islands.
The catch must have been loose and it came off on a day trip to a different island. I was absolutely gutted but we looked everywhere and couldn’t find it before the trip ended.
We were waiting at the bar at the airport for the flight home and I heard a man asking his wife where she got her bracelet from as he hadn’t seen it before, she replied she’d found it at the beach.
DP leaned over to look and saw it was my bracelet. We explained I’d lost it and showed photos of me wearing it, the women was happy to give it back, her husband wasn’t as happy but his wife was just amazed at the coincidence and the fact she’d found it.
They had been on holiday on the same island we were on so it must have fallen off where we were visiting and been washed up on the beach where their resort was when they found it, it was definitely the same bracelet.

I have the same birthday as my two best friends but all a year apart.

DP is from a different country but when we first met and swapped numbers we realised we both had almost all the same digits in our phone numbers but just in a different order.
We also both had the same phones with similar cases, on one occasion he accidentally picked mine up and went to put the PIN code in (years ago before face and touch ID) and it unlocked. We were both so confused but realised we both had exactly the same PIN code! It wasn’t anything simple like 1235 it was 4 different numbers with no significance to either of us.
A few years later we realised we both have the same ATM PIN code as well. I had changed mine from the one that came with the card but didn’t tell DP what it was, DP didn’t change his so it was the original PIN the bank sent with his card.
I find these coincidences the craziest of all, I bet the odds of each individually are high but combined must be almost impossible!

Sat on a bus in Africa & realised the person behind me used to work at the same company as me 5 years before.

I often meet people i know in random places around the world. I find it bizarre, but it happens more than you'd think!

My brother in law is the same. He meets people no matter where he travels. The best one was half way up a mountain lift he met an old friend

74Violette · 24/02/2025 07:16

OP, this kind of foretelling used to happen to me very often. I'd be in the supermarket and thought I'd seen someone I hadn't seen in years to then realise it wasn't them; to then a few aisles down see the real person from years ago. It was weird it happened lots of times.

They shouldn't be as they are completely randomly generated. There was a period around 1993 when NI numbers were generated in bulk so more likely for siblings to have consecutive numbers but myself and DB are outside of this time frame.

I need to know if it’s a good omen and should I do the lottery 🤣

My son in law’s mom has the exact same name as my mom. First, middle and surname. Surname is quite unusual. First name is has many spelling options.

There is one particular person that I keep bumping into. She was the sister of a childhood friend from when I was about 4. We live around 10 miles apart.

Shortly after my daughter was born, this lady was working in the hospital and she instantly recognised me and came to say hello.

Over the next few years I bumped into her unexpectedly at various fitness classes, in supermarkets and in different villages on perhaps 6 or 7 occasions.

Last week I was away for work in London and who did I bump into? This same lady.

Chances are she’s probably reading this thread too!

MummaOnThedge · 24/02/2025 08:07

I like things like this. I was on holiday in Cyprus for my wedding and my family were there with us. We went out the night before for my hen do. We ended up in a Karaoke bar and got talking to some girls there who were from the same town as us! Small world!

TwoRobins · 24/02/2025 08:20

Years ago I was very much into what we used to call 'new age' and signs from angels and guides etc. One day I was feeling very down and confused and said "If I am really on the right path, please send me a feather as a sign."

It was genuinely something I'd never asked for and came from sheer desperation.

The very next day I received a beautiful large white feather through to post with packed with sparkly confetti, sent by my friend in France who'd seen it felt the urge to send it.

She had sent it before I'd asked for it!

I never received a feather from anyone before or since.

Ok wow. plus this has also jogged my memory re something else. When I was in my 20s I was agonising over a big move overseas and I was looking at the sky (probably smoking) and I thought give me a sign - then a shooting star went across the sky.

Someone tell me what this all means 🤣
