Switzerland - so beautiful, fantastic public transport, high standard of living and so close to so many other countries.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:35

@Battisborough I don't subscribe to the cess pit belief but you really don't know anyone at all who has been a victim of those crimes in London?

trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:36

I'm a Londoner & whilst growing up my area was a bit sketchy I have only really ever lived in normal places.

Grammarnut · 20/02/2025 15:46

Were I 25 with a good education (instead of the age I am with a very good education) I would live in the UK. Brexit is an added incentive - I voted for it for the sake of my DC, GDC and GGDC.

EasternStandard · 20/02/2025 15:47

Depends on opportunity

UK but focusing on London if you can get a decent salary

Australia

Maybe Switzerland although haven't given it much thought

One of my dc keen on Finland or similar

caffelatte100 · 20/02/2025 15:47

It has to be Switzerland!

beautiful outdoors and sports - cycling, skiing, walking etc
good transport system throughout and to other countries
amazing healthcare
low crime rate
kids are independent - e.g. walk to school alone at 4/5 years old
good schools - local and international
top universities, which are almost free
strong economy - stable job market, high salaries, low unemployment, can save
true democracy
everything is clean and well-maintained

This makes me laugh so much. London is a cess pit of knife crime??? Siberia is a better and safer standard of living.

I mean maybe for small pockets of specific neighbourhoods in London but as someone who has lived in London for much of the last forty years I have never been mugged, burgled or threatened, nor have my children, my extended family or close friends. We live in normal neighbourhoods in London and live very happy lives surrounded my great parks, access to fantastic activities, fun nightlife and lots of interesting people.

So what you're saying is, you have a nice little bubble ...

Meanwhile .

The UK. Having lived in other countries, I still like it here best.

Even better to work in Switzerland and be paid in Swiss francs but living just over the border in France 🤣 better money and living in a cheaper country

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 20/02/2025 16:37

Scotland. I love Edinburgh and Glasgow, I'm an adopted Londoner and I love it here but if I had a parallel alternate universe thing I would have a go at living in Scotland.
The only personal crime I was ever the victim of in London was homophobia. Once in the street in a part of South West London a guy shouted lesbian and of course being nosy I looked round to see the lesbian. At this point a mature lady laughed and pointed out he was talking about me. I laughed with her and then the abuser, who wasn't horrible just a bit excited also laughed. It wasn't a crime then anyway.
I was burgled once, the police who came round both looked like especially attractive actors playing police in a film. The insurance paid for everything to be replaced really quickly.
I think people can worry a lot about crime but the reality isn't always what the daily mail says it is.

I'd leave this country given half a chance.
London is a cess pit of knife crime and violence. Shit all over the streets and filthy fuckers scumming up the place... Birmingham and Manchester, much the same.. Unless you can afford to live in a little bubble where you go from a nice secure home to a nice secure office, the UK is dire.

Where to go is tough.
Australia seems to have gone bonkers lately.

New Zealand perhaps?

I'd love to live in Japan, but the language barrier would be hard to get over.

Parts of America? Texas?

Hmm..

If money was non-issue, anywhere would be nice. Little gated home far away from the inconveniences of other peeple.
So imma say... Siberia.. Yakutsk is beautiful.

There's a big difference between big cities and elsewhere though. Writing off a country because of your experience of just one aspect of it seems a bit blinkered.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2025 16:53

Yakutsk is beautiful

just a tad chilly though!

LemonDropsXx · 20/02/2025 16:55

I moved to Australia 🇦🇺

cheezncrackers · 20/02/2025 16:57

Brexit has really changed the opportunities for young Brits in Europe, which is such a shame. A major reason I voted Remain was to try and keep those options for my own DC Sad

I don't know what I'd do now. I worked three countries OS when I was in my 20s/30s, two of them in Europe. I had the best time and absolutely no regrets. I would still want to live and work abroad if I was 25 now.

ValentineValentineV · 20/02/2025 16:57

Uk, I feel lucky to live here.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/02/2025 16:57

The way things are looking in the world at the moment I would plump for Atlantis.

HauntedBungalow · 20/02/2025 16:57

Argentina. Buenos Aires is one of the tiptop global cities imo.

Fuck me, it's Travis Bickle.

MumonabikeE5 · 20/02/2025 17:03

London. Within zone 2 if I was commanding good salary and in a good track, or if I were creative and had the means to pursue my art.
if not I’d want to live on the med. because I bloody love it. And could have made a pretty chilled life with good values.

Farellyo · 20/02/2025 17:04

Well it depends doesn't it. Different careers have different opportunities and advantages/disadvantages in different countries; personal likes & preferences ie like coastal living, city living, a mixture; what their priorities are.

People talk about knife crime but what pisses me off is the littering,m and low level fly tipping. Dog shit. and the speaker phone calls on buses.

that affects my day to day feeling more than the promise of knife crime.
